I was wondering that do drumkit ever get outdated. I mean if I buy one now, five years down the road, will it get outdated?

Many people said that Pearl Export 5 piece is good for intermediate drummers but is there any better alternatives? I will like to know whether it will be better order the drumkit online or should I go to any shop to buy.

If it's better to go shops to buy one, where should I visit if I live in Singapore? Are there any shops that sell them?

One last thing, what brand of drumsticks does not break easily?

No. Instruments get better with age, if properly cared for. In some cases technology may make an advance and a drum kit can be upgraded.

Case in point; Pearl ISS mounting system. This suppends the tom toms from the rim (hoop), as opposed to going through the shell. The result is increased sustain and tonality. I upgraded an older Pearl Export kit this way. Also, when I expanded the kit with an 8x8 and 14x12 toms, and an 18x22 kick, Pearl switched from mahogany to birch wood. This worked out well, as the combination of the two woulds just happened to fit in with their tuning. I love 'em.

That could be a draw back for some, however. In expanding a kit in the future, materials my change, including the lugs. Pearl changed wood before changing to low mass lugs, so the drums I wound up with have the tone I want and the same lugs. I didn't plan it that way, but it worked out nice.

Most manufacturers have series of drums in a relatively close price range. Buy the best you can afford. Stateside, you'll get the best price on a kit through online catalogue sources, such as American Musical Supply, Musicians Friend, etc. Shop, even amongst these or others, as each usually has some form of promotion, such as a free tom-tom (currently offered through Musicians Friend on a Pearl Export 5 piece, so, six piece kit for the same as a five piece kit, $739).

Being overseas, however, shipping charges may zero out any savings from a catalogue source, or you may get a better deal right where you're at, depending on the exchange rate, etc.

Ahead makes hybrid sticks that have a metal spine with high strength plastic overlay. They do not pronounce the same way as wood for rim shots, and they are absolutely worthless for side stick use, and for my taste, the bead does not produce a crisp clean "ping" when playing the ride cymbal.

As far as wood sticks go, one must pay attention to the orientation of the manufacturers logo. Just as with a baseball bat, keep the logo facing you. This will line up the stick "cross grain" relative to its target. This is the strongest orientation of the stick, and is considerably harder to break. Go with the grain and you can pop 'em on the shoulder all day long. Buy some el cheapos for practice. Get a pair of 2Bs also, to warm up with, not necessarily on the kit, but a practice pad or pillow.

Good luck, and practice, practice practice.

Drums do get outdated but it's a very slow process so I wouldn't worry about it. I thnk the Pearl Export is a great start. I've bought several for my school band program. I would try and purchase your set from a local dealer if possible. Not much can go wrong with a drum set. But if something does, and it's under warranty, most dealers will replace it instead of fixing it. If you buy it online you'll need to ship it and wait for a return.

Stick size and brand are a personnal preference. A lot depends on the style of music you'll be playing. I'd start off with Pro Mark sticks and go from there.
