This like any question about the middle east region is long and history based.

the short answer, is strategic economic intrest with political justification.

The war on terror is not a military war, as terror is an abstract term a word to describe a tatic.
there will always existist the use of that tatic hence the war will last forever. This is problematic for many reasons but,
in relation to the question........

We are still in Iraq because we are finishing construction of our 13 bases, we will soon find ourselves having to overthrow the democratic government that was voted in.

Why? because there are only two kind of leaders of governments those who are in power because they represent the intrest of thier country or rather thier countries resources and those leaders who are in power because they represent the intrest of the United states.

The war on terror is fought through intellegence gathering and law inforcement ect ect ect. military of course is used but not full scale invasions of countries.

iraq then is not a war on terror, it is to secure the output of petroleum and control prices. The Oil companies have their historic, not record setting but historic profits, in tern OPEC gets its money, they buy the U.S treasury bonds and the president can run on debt and keep tax cuts.

I love my country, but i refuse to play dumb about what it does to secure our intrest. Morally i have my opions.

I recommend you look at the overthrow of the democratic government in Iran in 1953, as a favor for Britian and the what happened from that time to the present as a lesson as to what is currently happening in iraq as well and how we got into this mess in the first place.

i ask myself that same question every day, especially since my husband is just about finish up his second 1 year tour down there. and i wanna say something to "knuffelbunny": what in the world has Iraq to do with war on terrorism. honey if you caught on to it yet, the only reason why our husband, wives, brother, sister, daughters, sons, fathers and mothers are still down there if so that mr. bush`s pockets can keep getting fatter. my husband loves being a soldier and is proud of being a soldier and if this "thing" in iraq make any sense at all for our people in america i would not have a problem with it. but what goes on down there is the biggest failure in U.S. Goverment history ever and all the innocent lives lost down there, wether on our side or theirs, are in vain and that is not what our soldiers, who i thank every day and pray for every day, each and every one of them, should have to put up with. granted, FREEDOM IS NOT FREE, but what goes on down there now has nothing to do with a war on terrorism, but only how to make the bush-clan richer!!

Because bush doesn't know how to disengage from his massive screw up while saving face thus we will be there until 2008 at least hopefully more enlightened leadership comes along.
