I heard this on TV on something tonight, in passing. They said a shaker full of salt taken at once (gag) will kill you. Is this true? Is it like... a fast death or does it mess up your kidneys and it drags on forever or what? Or does it have to do with your heart because you have to limit salt if you have heart trouble. Does anyone know? If so why doesn't it kill farm animals who lick on those big blocks of salt all the time?

I think they were referring to the cumulative effect of all that salt.

If a person managed to get the shakerful of salt down, I would think the next thing that would happen is s/he would throw up, because that much salt would act as an emetic.

I am a carpenter who works in the hot summer sun a lot, and if I don't have at least 2 teaspoons of salt per day when engaged thus, I get cramps (mainly in the back of the thighs) so bad that they do not "unlock" for hours, and I limp for days, So I don't think that any doctor can tell me that salt is bad for you if you are sweating a lot. Maybe if one sits in an air-conditioned office all day, yes it is a danger to the arteries and heart. But also one must drink plenty of water with the salt.

The necessary for an adult is about a half a teaspoon of salt a day, preferably with iodine . If you use salt that is not treated you might develop a tyroid gland.

Well, I know that when I have a glass of water with one tablespoon or two, u vomit if u have eaten anything.
So if you die by having a whole shaker of salt water, probably because your whole digestive system- your oesophagus(food carrying tube), stomach and in this case, possibly intestines and kidneys are overexhausted.
HOWEVER, i do not think that it will kill you.. but if u vomit too much, you may choke and die.. so plz dont try tricks on urself.. u have a living body.. dont kill it.. maybe u will not get it back.

As far as your question about the table salt, I don't have a answer. But as for the block of salt for live stock. It is a measured amount of salt with other minerals and vitamins in the salt lick (block salt). Live stock will lick it until they get their fill of salt. There is no way that it will harm the live stock... Good Luck

I think it should hurt like hell if you do that. Painfull death for sure. The animals licking the salt dont swallow the thing at once.

I don't think it would be fast at all. Salt raises blood pressure, and potassium maintains blood pressure by counteracting its effects. So first it would drain all the potassium into your blood stream, and then destroy your kidneys, and then it would still take quite some time before your functions cease.

i think it has to do with OSMOSIS...
if i remember it well, i already met that question...

well, when the said amunt of salt is talken of course it has to deal with our cells in our body...
since the salt is more concetrated than the cells...
the cells will tend to shrink causing the said amount of salt taken to be deadly...
