Bangkok is amazing, its so full of life and there is always something happenning. I went there on a major budget but i did splash out near the end of my trip. I initially stayed on the Koh san road area where i stayed in a hostel called the green house near the monastary, it was £1 a night for a double room with a window, a fan and clean sheets. The monastary area near koh San road is the best because even though its only a two minute walk to the main tourist area its much cheaper and quieter and better food and drinks. i suggest just arriving there, getting a cab at the airport to koh san road and checking in somewhere, they are all open late and there is always a room available. Do however check the room before paying for it to make sure its what you are looking for. Dont get a hotel at the airport because they will sell you something that is totally overpriced and miles away from everything.

Thai people are amazing and the jujutuk market is unreal, it has EVERYTHIBG you could imagine and its well cheap, haggle because it works and you can pick up some great bargains.

It is so worth going into one of the many hostels as well and organising a bus trip to kanchanaburi, for about £5 you get a minibus to take you to the bridge on the river kwai and the floating market, if you do this the cheap way they do make a stop at the sugar cane factory or the pottery market in the hopes of you buying something but its well worth it and you never know you may see something you like.
There are sooooo many temples and those are all amazing too and you can get a tour guide to show you around as well for about £10. Look out for beggars near the temples though.

Generally thailand is safe but there are a few things to watch out for .. one tuk tuk drivers (three wheeled motorbikes with a cariage) , these may seem like a fun way to get around but be warned they will take you places to buy stuff and it may take hours to get home.
Always ask the taxi driver to put on the meter, they are required by law and if they refuse get out and get another one.
its all fun though and thats all part of it. An amazing place with lots to see and do. i wish i was going back there. have fun!!

Hi, Bangkok has hundreds of hotels and guesthouses for you to stay in. One website which is pretty good is www.asiarooms.com and it has all the information that you will need to choose your accommodation. You can even make net booking for some more savings for some of them.

As for visiting, I suggest you take a guided tour around the city on coach and do one on the river. You can get this from any travel agent there, especially in your hotel or nearby. You will know what are the better sights to see and can plan your other visits in other days.

Shopping is aleays good. If you have the weekend, plan to go to Chatuchak or Jatujak Weekend Market. Easily accessible by both Skytrain and underground train. So it is very convenient especially with the heavy city traffic. Literally thousands of stores and shops for you to browse, so expect to spend quite some time there. Usually open from Friday afternoon till Sunday evening.

Suan Lum Night Bazaar is another big night market in Lumpini area. A modern Chatuchak as some visitors called it. Open evenings everyday.

There are other night street markets, along Sukhumvit Road, Silom Road and Khaosan Road. These are more known to tourists. There are few more spread around the city, especially near the river.

Chinatown is great for visiting, daytime for shopping and night time for dinner. Do make a trip there if you can.

There are theme parks located around. Snake Farm, Dusit Zoo, Animal Safari, Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha Temple, Vinmenak Mansion, Siam Water Park, etc. You can get the info from the travel agents. Look through www.tourismthailand.org for other sights not mentioned here.

You can email me at tongbn@yahoo.co.uk if you want more info.

If you love cultural stuff, stay by the River, the Shangrila, Royal Orchid Sheraton are excellent hotels to soak up the river view and take a river cruise.

If you're a serial shopping, the Intercontinental and Grand Hyatt are smacked right in the middle of the up-market shopping district.

The Novotal and Pathumwan Princess are located in Mah Boon Krong and Siam Square are where you get mostly teenagers shopping.

Many international hotels will have a travel desk. My advise is to check into a hotel and then approach the travel desk for day tours. Plenty of choices. No worries.

Have fun in BKK.

It all depends on what you want out of Thailand but most people go there because it is world known for being the Sex capital of the world.

Now if that is what you are going for then find a cheap hotel in the Sukumvit area and a visit to Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy and Pat Pong is a must. If you get a chance visit the Nana Hotel disco easy to get a nice bird there.

In Bangkok you MUST see the following: Grand Palace & Emerald Buddha, Wat Po, Wat Arun, Chatuchuk weekend market & the Golden Mount. Plenty more to see, but those are the essentials. Also, hire a long-tail boat and do a tour of the back canals. Chinatown is interesting, too. Go shopping at the MBK and around Siam Square.
As for places to stay, depends on your budget! If your backpacking, stay at a hostel on Khao San Road. Another cheap option is 'Jim's Lodge' on Soi Ruam Rudee (my father-in-law stayed there and liked it). Plenty of hotels for all budgets, just look on the net.
I don't know what you are into, but if you want to avoid the seedy side of Bangkok (i.e. sex tourism) stay away from hotels around Patpong and Nana (particularly Soi 4!!!). If, on the other hand, that is what you come for, those are the places to go ;) .
Hope you'll like it here!!!

PS: Should you get bored of the hustle and bustle of the city, you can get a coach from Ekamai bus terminal to go down to the island of Samet; or head north from Mo Chit bus terminal for some hiking in Kao Yai National Park. Kanchanaburi (famous for the 'Bridge on the River Kwai') is a beautiful place to visit, too.

Try not to stay in Bangkok to long if you can help it. Kanchanabra is a nice chilled out place.
Chang Mia is also fun if you get there stay at the Libra Guest house. It is cheap and very very clean and staff are so lovely. They also arrange tracking for you and can pick you up from Airport too for no extra cost.
Enjoy your time there and I wish I was coming with you.

Ok I was in thailand 3 yrs ago. I liked the place but I think I'm going to either singapore, or taipei next. The problem with thailand is that it is a little to tourist oriented..I know that taipei and singapore will have the same ellement but maybe not as much. I found thai people to be nice but if you are a guy and you talk to some of the locals you may encounter that they have a bit of a "chip" on their shoulders cause of thailand being a "sex tourist" capital. Its hard to explain but its there. I may return to thailand as Jomtein beach near pattaya city is cool but it may have tsunami damage now. Bangkok is really fun and sumkimvit road is incredible at night, and a great city to walk and explore. I went into the adidas store and went consumer crazy. But back to the women, they are really nice, if you are half way good looking..NO PROBLEM, I was never even asked for money. Soi cowboy is an area near off sukimvit road and I didn't even stop in any of the strip clubs you will know why, I didn't go to nana plaza but it has alot of strip clubs and wanted to check out pattaya, bus ride is about 2 hours. I met a chick in pattaya and I rented a motor bike and for 2 days she showed me around..I will never forget "jak" she is an angel on earth..she never asked for a dime but I ended of probably giving her prob 700.00 US as its not everyday you meet such a nice person, I even met her family. Anyway another really cool place is the pier in pattaya, take a strole on it at night its better than a disney ride its so rickity, it may be gone cause of the tsunami. Have fun

as there are many good places to stay here are some tips. If you want a nice beach, i would suggest going to krabi or to koh samui.

also very interesting and laid back is chiang mai up north.

i would also spend some days in bangkok. it is a fascinating city with many things to see. but this is personal taste. i always enjoy to have some change during holidays: first, shopping and party in the city, then relax at the beach.

here are some accommodation suggestions:

for samui:
http://www.excelloz.com/Koh_Samui/hotel-Coral_Bay_Resort.html
the coral bay resort was where i stayed on samui. i found it good on chaweng beach.

for bangkok:
i stayed at the eastin hotel which is pretty cheap but a good hotel.

chiang mai:
i stayed at a guest house here and i really cant remember the location nor the name too well as i only stayed there for 2 days several years ago.

krabi:
definitely stay on railay beach. i loved thisd place, its beautiful.
http://www.excelloz.com/Krabi/hotel-Railay_Bay_Resort_and_Spa.html

this is where i stayed and it was alright. railay beach is one of the best beaches in thailand.

Eat .. all decent looking restaurant are ok. Street food are generally ok, unless you are terribilily unlucky.

If you like japanese - Fuji chain is great great value for money.
