Doesn't religion cause so much s&*t in the world, even one simple question has caused a frenzy of opinionated answers from different backgrounds.
There is more evidence for the existance of UFO's that a superior being existing only in a faith.
Some people are easily influenced, others enjoy what cards life deals for them and enjoy the ride!

I don't know if the 72 virgins story is true or not but I think, if a person has been brainwashed for long enough, for example, since early childhood, and he is kept from the influence of other ways of thinking and values and never encouraged to challenge and question what is taught, then yes, he will believe anything he is told. The kamikaze did what they were told to do during WWII with absolute obedience but this generation of Japanese, living in one of the most information-technology advanced countries in the world, are probably not prepared to sacrifice themselves in the same way as their great grandfathers.

Religon is what violent people use as an excuse. A violent, hate filled blinkered individual is going to be that way whether they are Muslim, Christian, Budist, Satanist, or Chocolatist!
It's not about the religon - religon is just the cover. I've met many people from many many faiths and guess what - they were all very similiar - nice people who believed their own thing and got on with their lives, some were more passionate than others but none of them wanted to torture, main or kill others who don't have the same faith as them.
Someone once said something along the lines of "We fight for our religons, we die for our religons........why can't we just live for our religons?"

As a muslim, let me reply ...
1. 72 virgins is a bullshit concept..paradise the thing itself is of fantasy and imagination. its a motivation tool.
2. suicide is strongly and strictly forbidden in Islam.
3. Resurrection is a contradictory matter.
brainwashing is a common practice. but some ultra orthodox and ignorant fanatics always take the chance to brainwash people. What do we say about commies, communism a failed idoelogy.

I agree totally. Brainwashed, brainwashed, brainwashed. I practice no religion, because no matter what people say about it not being the cause of war, it is a very huge part of the world's problems. I'm also a realist and not deluded into thinking absurd things will happen to me when I die. Why can't people accept we live, we die that's it? It's very sad. Are there atheists out there trying to ruin lives and murder people on a massive scale?! And even if there was a god up there (yea right) then do you think he, she, it, would approve of murder of innocent people?

how can christians 'become so radicalised' that they believe there was no death until some dude ate a fruit than a god man came to die and that washed away the effects of the sin caused by the fruit eater, although we are still born with sin and we get to live forever in the sky if we love Jesus?
believing in 72 virgins is no more silly than any other monotheistic belief. so shut up

I went to Turkey recently and came across alot of people who weren't stereotypically following the religion- but they had the concept live and let live; those who practice it can and those who don't will have drink of Raki.... very high content in alcohol. I was pleasantly surprised.
We came across a very deightful young handsome restaurant owner who we got talking to and turned out to be quite the funny man. Initially he said he didn't drink, isn't married, is generally a good muslim- then he stuck a pint infront of me that he was sipping on casually- i asked him what he was doing- he said 'having a beer!' He went into the wise words of the people who say he shouldn't drink and do unislamic things or he'll go to hell. He says to us, 'these men, they go on about not getting into heaven and getting to be with loads of women and there's a secured place in hell for people who are considered unorthodox.' He says he asked the wise man 'so what kind of people go to hell?' Wise man answered ' People who drink, who don't pray, dirty women like Pamela Anderson.....' So the resaturant owner says- 'ok- i don't care about heaven- i don't mind going to hell if people like her are there..... the only thing is i'll be there with the entire american football team too- so there'll be a bit of competition but it's good there'll be a challenge!' I thought among him and alot of other Turkish muslims there, they were very liberal and jovial about life.
The 72 virgins story was a joke to them too!

Well????
I am not saying all Muslims are bad as this isnt the case, but they are always the few that but a bad name to them. Unfortunately the bad ones are a growing population.
