Paid or unpaid.
Paid - Microsoft XP Pro
Unpaid - Fedora Core 5 Linux
How? Stick the CD/DVD in drive reboot/turn on computer and follow the instructions on the screen.
Linux requires more knowledge than Microsoft but has far better security and stabiliity.
Most of the packages you will have heard off cannot be used in linux however linux has free alternatives.

There are lots of OSs available for your dektop. The most widely used will be MS Windows. And then there is the Mac. But I believe the best OS(may not be for a beginner) is the many flavors of Linux out there. The best thing about Linux is that you dont have to pay for it. There is Fedora, Debian, SuSe and many many more. But the best I like is Ubuntu. Its the one I prefer and you can go to the website and ask them to ship cds to you and they'll do it for free. Check their website, www.ubuntu.com
