For the same reason all of the non-celebrities claim to be Christians, but really aren't. They have no clear concept of what a Christian really is. If they aren't meek, they have the wrong attitude. In Christianity, attitude is everything. Ask yourself, "Does this person seem to be the type to turn the other cheek?" If the answer is no, then the person is probably a faker.

Because when their children are little, Christians make them play sports. Church schools Field teams, sports is seen as a good way to keep a boy our of trouble. This may be an overgeneralizing but there really aren't enough Jewish sports stars to make a blip on the nations consciousness. When little Jewish boys are small they get praise for studying hard and their mothers worry about them having head injuries and knocking their teeth out. Freethinking athletes are not going to stand out by thanking random chance and natural selection for the win today. As we get more Muslims in sports, things might change.
so that's why they all claim to be Christians. And we know in any group of Christians there are hypocrites. They say themselves, love of money is the root of all evil. When these young men get a $hitload of money dropped on them at an early age, Blessed are the poor in spirit, goes flang out the window.

Are you sure that 'they' all do it?

Problem is that most people who claim to be Christian don't act like it.

Why should thugs and sports stars be any different?

Let me think a minute.

Oh, yes; now I remember.

Tiger Woods, who is a sports star, is no thug and has never spoken of his faith. And yet he is a gentleman, a tremendous athlete and never acts like anything.

I do not mean to be unkind or impune your character but - well - do you act like a Christian?

Claiming to be a Christian (or any other religion) and not act according to the philosophy of that religion is extremely common. (This is not limited to celebrities.) I worked with and for people who were very clear about their religious allegiance; however, they happened to be the meanest, cruelest people that corporate America can cough up. On the other hand, there are indeed religious people out there who truly practice what they believe. We don't hear too much from them, because they don't wear their religion on their sleeves.

Personally, I think you're putting all athletes in the same category. Shaq doesn't act like a thug, and he's a christian. The same thing can be said about Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Tim Duncan.........

Same reason the President of the US CLAIMS to be a Christian, yet when it comes to the poor, the disabled, the elderly, the downtrodden and the invisible mentally ill he is absent.

Many people like to claim Christianity or piety, but when it becomes inconvenient for them or the work involved gets hard or dirty, they quickly make excuses and slip away. Many people will claim anything they think might make them look better or win votes, yet they are not willing to put in the actual sweat it might take to actually WALK WHAT THEY TALK.

Not every sports star in America claims to be Christian .... I can name Mohammad Ali as an example.

Simply put, they're not. There's a lot more to being christian than saying "im christian", but then again don't expect them to realize that. They have devoted their whole lives to a sport. I mean, how selfish can you get?

It's like voting in a way. People grow up with parents that believe in something, so they just assume to believe in it even though they probably have never even held a bible, much less read it.
