I struggled with GI to be honest. It's just not in depth enough. There's a short list of what you can eat, a long list of what you can't eat, and then a million other foods that aren't in either list and so you don't know if you have then or not!!
I think you're best off getting a recipe book because the diets quite vague and rather difficult as well.
There are other more thorough diets out there such as Weight Watchers which are more in depth and if you don't know the point value of a food, at least you can work it out. Whereas with the GI, if you don't know, you can't eat it!!
However, having said that, I found this website quite useful when I was attempting the GI diet:

I have done the Low Carb diet and lost loads of weight, felt really well and looked fantastic.
However - I did encourage other people to do it also and every single one I know felt really ill on the Low Carb diet. So I strongly suggest you get your doctors advice.
The GI diet seems a much more balanced approach to the same diet idea.
Whatever you do - stay balanced and don't do anything extreme.

Go buy a GI book. I lost loads of weight on it, it is easy to follow and can be applied to every day life and you can stick to it and don't get hungry.. U can almost eat anything within reason. Loadsof high fibre ie wholemeal pitta bread, loads of lentils and pulses. Try a chilli con carne with quorn and beans in it. Basmati rice is the best rice ot eat ( low G.I ) All whole meal pasta's and spagetti's. No potato's although you can have 4 small new pots with your dinner. The G.I book by Rick Gallop is a very good guide to what you can and can't eat, plus it will give you some ideas for dinner.

A low carb diet will be naturally low GI. Just make sure you stick to real natural foods. Contrary to popular belief, whole grain pasta is not natural. It is processed.
Stick to meats, green veggies, fruits in moderation: here use lowest GI fruits. Dont worry about veggies unless its corn and to a lesser degree carrots. Don't worry about fats except for transfats. Dont eat fried foods unless you do it yourself in coconut oil. And don't forget nuts and seeds. Great to snack on between meals.

Eat what you want, but within reason and be happy with who you are, then your weight won't matter.
