My son is 3 and a half....he has been dry during the day since he was 2 but is still wearing nappies at night. I was waiting till we got to the point that they were dry in the morning but that day has never come!! The thought of waking up night after night to change wet sheets is not appealing to me but I really want him dry soon. We did try a while ago but by 1.30am he was wet and I gave in and put a nappy. Please has anyone got any ideas or tips to help???
Thanks xx

We have just bitten the bullet, put a potty in his bedroom and told him if he needs a wee then to get up and use it. We are 1 week in and he has been wet but knows he should use the potty. We don't tell him off if he is wet just ask him what he should have done.
He has got better over the week. Fingers crossed he'll be dry tomorrow.

I am a great believer in not just taking a nappy away from a baby, as this may make them feel bad about wetting the bed all the time. With my daughter I bought her crappy cheap generic nappies for the night time that kept the bed dry, but made her feel the wet. The problem with all the disposable nappies at the moment is that they make them too dry so that they don't feel the discomfort. Also before you go to bed pick him up and take him to the toilet so that he can pee. Most kids wet the bed around 12 or 1 in the morning if they go to bed at say 8pm. If you do this the right way, cradling him to the toilet, he shouldn't wake up, he should just pee and be fine. After about a month or so of this he should be OK to do without nappies at night.

This is what I did (and it worked after a bit of perserverance!):

1) cut down fluids for 2 hours before bedtime
2) Explain to your child that you're going to see if he can go all night without a nappy and that you will take him to the toilet during the night, so that he won't worry about being wet
3) About midnight, lift him onto the toilet - most children won't really wake up too much at this point, but will wee on autopilot when sat on the loo!
4) Do the same thing again very early in the morning - say about an hour or so before he'd wake up

You WILL have a couple of wet sheet incidents, this is unavoidable, but stick with it, you'll get there!

Good luck.

My son was under the bedwetting clinic,

the advice was

don't limit drinks during the day
dont drink tea coffee blackcurrent or coke
dont put them under pressure
dont put the child on the toilet in the night, this does not train them to do it themselves

basically the brain has a chemical that tells the body to shut down urine production at night and until this is ready there is not much you can do.

Why are you in a rush to get rid of the nappies 3 and a half is still young?? If it is the cost minki huggle wahsable nappies are great!

Stop giving drinks 2-3 hours before bedtime. Make sure he goes potty before bed.

Don't make a fuss of him being wet or getting his sheets wet, as this will make him stress out and be more likely to repeat it. Just encourage him to stay dry throughout the night. Leave a potty in his room so if he has to go, he can go without going too far. Give him lots of hugs and praise when he does stay dry, and give him a reward (stickers or a colouring book).

Some children just adapt to toilet training (day and night) slower than others. He'll get it, don't worry. In the meantime, just use night time nappy-pants and be patient :)

my son is 4 and has been off night nappies for 2 yrs now. I found if i put him in nappies at night it made him lazy.
How i sorted it was to but the bed time mats to put under sheets. I wont allow him to drink anything after 6 (bedtime 7)
I take him to the toilet before he goes to bed and leave a potty in his bedroom so if he wakes and needs the toilet he has one in his room. Hope this helps good luck

You need to watch his fluid intake and make him go potty before bed time. But my question is who cares if hes wearing a nappy/diaper at nite. If it keeps the bedding dry so it doesn't get ruined, he gets a good nights sleep, he doesn't care if he wears a nappy to bed, so what. Keep him in nappies and have a good nights rest. He will grow out of it and stay dry but for now, go with the flow.

this is always hard but you must...

Talk to him and tell him he is a big boy and doesnt need nappys at night and must go to the toilet

Give him his last drink 1 hour before he goes to bed

Tell him every night before he goes to bed he MUST use the toilet!

Continue to do this everynight until he gets up in the night and you are sure that he will be ok

BUT this will not work for a few nights so i suggest that you get a dry nights sheet thing they should sell them in shopping centres. Its like a plastic sheet that you put down on his bed and he lies on it incase of accidents.

Hope this works

Just go for it as long as you put nappies on him he will wee them. It will be a pain for a while and you will need to buy extra washing powder and maybe a new mattress ! He thinks this is OK you see as you keep putting them on him. Have a chat with him about it. Limit the amount of drink before bed time and i know some people who sit their kids on the toilet when the parents go to bed. Find your way but this may help. Just bite the bullet as he will stay in them for as long as you let him.

When my kids were coming out of nappies I used to sit them on the potty and wait for them to pee, before I went to bed. I had to keep hold of them while they were sat there as they were half asleep and sometimes it took a while for them to go but it works. My kids have never wet the bed since I did this.
It's worth a try!
