When somebody wrongs you it can create a wound deep inside. You have to let that wound open up and drain all the hate out, or it will just fester and eventually poison your life. Forgiveness is essential for healing.
This doesn't mean you have to accept their act or relieve them from punishment. Hate the sin, but love the sinner. If they are totally beyond redemption, then humane execution may be required. But even the families of murder victims can benefit by forgiving the murderer.
