My 6 week old kitten got stepped on by accident and his hind leg now has a femoral break I need to know are there any other options for treating this besides surgery? And if not what does a surgery like this cost?

If your kitten hasn't already been seen by a vet, you need to take him/her to one. (I'm guessing you have, given that you know it has a femoral fracture).

The problem with fractures of the femur is that they are virtually impossible to stabilise with a cast because you need to immobilise the joint above and below the fracture. This isn't an issue as far as the stifle (knee) is concerned, but try to imagine how hard it would be to have your hip in a cast in such a way that it can't move! Mostly therefore they need plating/pinning at the very least.

It's impossible to give an idea of surgery costs without knowing how severe the fracture is- you also have to take into account other costs like radiographs and medications. If it's a relatively minor break, then a local vet can do the surgery, but if it's extensive you may need referral to an orthopaedic specialist.

If money's an issue for you, talk to your vet about it. Most are pretty good about coming up with payment plans, etc. Your vet may also be able to recomment somewhere where your kitten can be treated more cheaply- e.g. some big shelters will provide treatment to pets for people who otherwise would not be able to afford that treatment.

Good luck anyway- your kitten's age should work in his/her favour. Young cats heal amazingly well!

No one will be able to tell you the cost of this until the kitten has been examined. You need to take the kitten into the vet for this. They will give you an estimate of how much it's going to cost. If it's too much then take them for a second opinion. Ask your friends what vet they have and how much he or she charges. I know of 3 vets in my area and they all charge different amounts and 2 of them work with me and let me make payments. That is another option. Ask them if they can help you so you don't have to pay the whole thing at once. Hope your kitten gets better soon. Good luck.

Please get the kitty surgery, its so young and has trusted its life with you. Would you deny your child surgery?

Either the surgeon can fix the break and the kitten will have to wear a cast for a while, or the leg will need to be amputated (this is also a cheaper route...but its so sad.)

If you can't pay for it, call your local ASPCA (or RSPCA, or equivalent), you can sign over the kitten and they will treat the leg and find the kitten a new home.

Don't force it to suffer just because you don't want to pay.

He certainly needs to go to a vet. Was it a vet that disagnosed the break with an x-ray? Did he suggest surgery? Didn't you get an estimate from him? Does the kittem have pain mediation?

If you tell us these things then people can come up with prices for you to compare. I think it could be splinted and he might heal with that and I would certainly take the vet's advice if you don't want a crippled cat.

My cat had the same problem. Get the surgery done, it is the only way!
