to make the cake soak up the icing.....use an ice pick or other sharp tipped object and put small holes in the cake before putting on the icing.

Chocolate icing Recipe

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Mix together. Bring to a boil and boil for 1 minute. Add vanilla. Cool partially, then beat.
If you want it thinner, just add a tad bit more milk so the cake will soak it up.
This recipe for 1 Minute Chocolate Frosting makes 1.5 cups

You put small tablespoons of the mixture all around the cake. You slowly pull the mixtures to the middle, bit by bit and then drag your spreader around the cake. Then but a small circle of icing in the centre and spread it out and drag off at the edges to get the crusty edges but scrape off. Then softly sprinkle some icing mixture over the mixture and don't touch the cake. but it in a cool place and don't use any covering that touches the surface of the icing until it's frozen.

If you have made a nice solid icing originally, then you should have ended up with really crisp icing spread evenly like with those professional cake makers.
