It is far too long, the kids get so bored, it's too expensive to take them out or on holiday all the time. Parents that have to work have problems finding child care and when they do they have to pay over the odds. I notice the sarky comments come from men, i can't imagine half of them coping with children for what's become nearly 7 weeks. I've noticed that since the goverment said that they were looking into reducing the main holiday it seems to have been lengthened by many schools adding teacher training days. I for one love having the kids at home, but i like you, look forward to my own space when they go back.

Without wanting to sound like a total witch, I'm absolutely ecstatic my partner's child has gone back to school! He's been with us pretty much every day throughout the holidays and it's been WAY too much for me, although my partner's really had a great time with his son which is the most important thing. However, I now have my freedom back, our cat is no longer traumatised by small child throwing large objects at him, and the house is now peaceful and quiet once more ... bliss!!!

Actually I did have my kids and my daycare kids around for the 6 weeks of summer vacation and when all 8 of them went back to school I was so pleased on the first day of school that I found myself waking up at 6:30pm, I didnt even know the kids had made it back from school.

Yes, I'm glad they're back - and to be honest I think they are glad they're back too. My daughter just started P1 and my son just started nursery and they were both so excited. Plus I think they were both a bit bored by the end of the summer holidays. Having said that I don't think 6 weeks really is too long - I think it's really good for them to have that time to properly unwind, switch gears, do stuff that is completely non-academic. Football camp, swimming lessons, arts & crafts, holiday playschemes that will take them on day trips, paddling pools in the back garden, planting seeds - I'm already gearing up for next summer!

ME, ME, ME!! My kids are all grown up, but my husband is a school bus driver and I'm sooooo glad he'll be back on his route, playing with the kids on his bus. He's a bigger kid than they are, always arguing over which station to play on the radio, and singing songs off-key. I also get some privacy so I can re-start my aerobic exercise with my tape. All good reasons for school to start. Oh and by the way...our school has the whole summer off, so six weeks is a breeze compared to that! <*)))><

My house is the house where all the kids hang out. They are safe, happy and entertained. I don't think the break is too long; but, where are you getting 6 wks from? Our kids get 9 wks. There is so much to do around here (WA state) that I very rarely hear any one say they are bored. Get off your butts and do something with your kids. Remember what it was like to be a kid? Get out and enjoy them! They are interesting people.

Happy is probably not the word I would use but RELIEVED most definately , I have 2 kids and all they have done for the last 6 n half weeks is fight. At least when my eldest is at school the youngest will be able to sit and watch all his baby programmes as my daughter would put it. And i get just over 6 hours of no fighting. whoopee

No....you see I work as a playworker for a out of school/holiday club..and when it's school holidays I can make up hours, but during school term time..work just for the after school club I get less hours, and I miss the kids and staff which I only work with during school holidays.
Yes. It's good to have a rest from the children after six weeks of, games, art craft, sports, day trips, chaos, mess, noise etc..
Six weeks is just fine I think,I'd lose my job if it where to be reduced..in U.S they don't have half term..so their summer hoildays is almost three months. so I think our school holidays are nicely broken up through out the year,
maybe you should book them into playschemes/playcare or activity days to take the boredom away
cheer up though it's only six weeks away before the kids brake up again.

utterly thrilled. I work in a pharmacy in a supermarket, and all ive had for the last 6 weeks is kids running round uncontrollably screaming their heads off.
Thank god theyve gone back.
Mine starts reception year in 2 weeks, cant wait! Will be able to get my housework done in peace!
And yes, 6 weeks is far too long, it makes it difficult for parents working, we have to scatter our holidays through the school hols, it should definitely be shorter.

i think 6 weeks is a nice time to have with your kids without stress of homework, routines etc.
however from the point of view as a sister (me) just finished school had 6 weeks worth of babysitting cos my brother was selfish enough to leave me to it all the time, i say it is too long cos i havent had a break and now i am going to start A levels on thursday the only day i have off is tomorrow yay what a break
