Depends on which religion you mean. I think most people who grow up Christians, or possibly people who grow up in other formal religions, believe that all religions are pretty similar. You may go to your place of worship on Saturday or on Sunday, but you all have once a week you get together and maybe sing songs or chant prayers and do this together ritual and then go home and act normal for another week.
It's not like that for everyone. For some people, their religion is woven into everything they do, all day, every day. The one group people know about is Buddhists, but there are plenty of others. The idea of the world of the spirit, and your relationship to it, is a part of all your decisions, all your patterns of behavior at home, at work or school, in the shopping mall, everywhere. This does not count as possessing truth; this IS truth. This is the truth which informs and shapes your very being. It's not doctrine, it's life!

Mystics have argued, to borrow an example from Joseph Campbell, that "the truth" can be thought of as a light. Religion, as Campbell suggested, is like a grate that, by filtering the light, makes the light more visible. The problem with religion, as Campbell noted and as your question suggests, is that the grate tends to become so dense that eventually it blocks the light out altogether. The trick, according to many mystics, is overcoming the need for the grate i.e. religion and comprehending the light in its fullness for oneself. Of course, if one is living in a completely dark and filthy tunnel that is the human condition, one might begin to wonder if there really is any light at all.

On a wild chance take $35 dollars and buy the audio version (CD's) of the book: Eckhart Tolles' "The Power of Now" listen to it and then tell me what you think. Take your time and listen to it in its entirety. Go at your own pace and meditate to the meaning of what he is attempting to explain. You will understand how religion has two fundamental aspects to it...the dogmatic aspect and the spiritual one. The other great book he has is "A New Earth" Just take a chance here and give this a try....I guarantee you will come away with a new perspective on God and religion..

What the heck does that mean?
Religion is lies touted as truth. It's a collection of mythology, superstition, and tradition. It's little more than an OCD complex, an attempt to control what we have no control over.

Religion has been twisted and demented by men so much that it is not what it was in the beginning.
It is a guideline for you to live closer to God.
It is a guideline on how to make heaven on earth.
It has been abused and weilded as a weapon by man.
I am still spiritual but I have lost faith in todays grasps on religion :(
sorry God :(

We cannot know what is truth without the teachings from religion.
From time immemorial, the Messengers of the One True God have taught us who is man, where he comes from and where he will go.
Selfless love, the essence of these teachings, has brought man up from family unity to world unity now.

Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the father but through me" If your honestly looking for truth, it starts with Jesus.
