VW Gol is the Brazilian version (cheaper, smaller engine, simpler) of the European VW Golf.
so if you go to Brazil, you will see a lot of Gol cabs, and some imported Golf.
and if you want (and can read Portuguese), you can even build your own Gol online:
http://www.vw.com.br/default.asp?turl=%2Fautomoveis%2Fgol%2FDefault%2Easp%3F
According to the official Brazilian VW website, the VW Gol has been the market leader for the last 19 years, with more than 4.5 million units sold.

yeah.. they're everywhere else on the planet except the US... as is the Polo
They're sort of a smaller VW jetta...
The Gol is the American VW Fox. VW stopped selling them in the US because we thought they sucked.
They were aircooled once... (VW's only sad attempt at an front engine aircooled car).

I have had 3 VW GOlfs.
1987 - I drove for 180,000 miles before trading in
1995 - I drove for 175,000 miles then gave to my boyfriend who took her to 250,000+ miles
2000 - I'm still driving at 165,000 miles and saving up to replace
All my cars are manual transmission (stick shift) and therefore a bit more reliable than automatics. All those cars were driven hard, as I go many miles and tend to drive aggressively. They're great cars!
