Not all Army personnel drink. I know a few non-drinkers myself. I'm always Designated Driver as well.
Your ex boyfriend's drinking problem has nothing to do with him being a servicemember. That's like saying all high school students smoke dope or all college males do keg stands. The Army has programs in place for alcoholism when it gets bad and the results of binge drinking, when they impact work, are punished quite severely.
And FYI, a good number of us don't drink when we have problems, but the work environment isn't exactly stress-free. If your ex resorted to drink, he had issues that needed to be addressed on a personal level. Many of us handle the stress without resorting to binge drinking.
As for your relationship problem, no one here knows you or him personally I'd warrant, so it sounds like a personal problem for you to solve. Good luck.

It's not just an army thing. Most people who drink a lot did so before they joined the service. And not all service members drink a lot. Did you ever try asking him why he drinks? I don't by that whole thing about well service members drink to escape what they have done and seen. My husband served in Iraq 2 times and he doesn't hardly ever drink and when he does he doesn't get all mean and abusive. If he can't stop drinking maybe he should attend some AA meetings. Don't go back to him unless you are certain he has changed his life style. If you really love him try to help him stop being a drunk.

You can't do anything but give him another chance and see what happens or get over it and move on. Accept him for who he is or don't be in his life. He has enough to go through without having you ***** about drinking. He only put you through as much as you were willing to take. I suggest you forget about relationships for a while, go back to school, and learn how to spell. Have a nice day and good luck with your future "relashionships".

To be honest, I wish I knew the answer to this. I am Prior and didn't really drink to get drunk. My Ex-DH was also Military and we Entertained daily with drinks....and such. But nobody got drunk...My current DH is also Military, and he doesn't drink.
But, for some reason,. it is the 'norm' for Military persons to drink. Some, it is just to forget....others, they have had a drinking problem prior to joining the Military. I know that over here where I live, it is easier to get alcohol for those who are 18 as that is the drinking age here....

Soldiers are indulged to drinking to escape from the intricacies of military life. Thus, they drink a lot to at least forget pressures of war and duty. Anyway, assess the situation and decide for yourself.

unfortunately army men and drinking goes together like women and nagging about drinking. why dont you pull out your m16 and go and stand on a border scared for your life as well as your entire unit and think about your man back home and who's he with right now and drink a cup if cofee when you're free to calm your nerves.

Men in the military have the second highest rate of spousal abuse just after police officers. Take your chances if you want to. My advice, don't waste your time with an alcoholic. It takes a more serious event than a breakup to get rid of that habit.

In the Army you are encouraged to go out and get drunk on your off time to relieve stress. Many soldiers become alcoholics this way.
