There are many theories as to why this particular finger came to symbolize marriage. Both the ancient Romans and Egyptians believed that a vein - called the vena amoris in Latin - ran directly from that finger to the heart.
Both wedding bands and engagement rings are very special items of jewelry; in fact, they are more than just jewelry - they are the symbols of many emotions and promises such as:
By wearing the ring on the third finger of the left hand, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other.
Love
Commitment
Fidelity
Eternity
Honour
The purpose of engagement rings and wedding bands is to convey deep emotions of eternal love, eternal happiness, eternal commitment, and eternal togetherness. In fact, these rings signify eternity - between the giver and the recipient.
A ring, of course, is a complete circle with no break and no end or beginning, which means that it just goes on and on - it is eternal.
By wearing the ring on the third finger of the left hand, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other.
I know when I got my Engagement ring i tmelted my heart and I know that my then fiance now Husband put a lot of thought into it Cause it was so beautiful.
But in the end in my opinion it don't think it really matter because if you really love each other why does it matter? you may follow tradition or not it is totally up to you and your partner!

western people usually wear the engagement ring on their left hand and this is replaced by the wedding ring at the marriage cermony, then some replace the engagement ring on the same finger as symbol of protection for the wedding band. An eternity ring can also be worn on this finger to show a continuing love between the couple after many years of marriage.
In Eastern countries it is more usual to wear the wedding ring on the right hand, engagement rings are less often seen here.
Doesn't really matter as long long as the couple are happy with what they are doing.

According to an ancient legend, the Greeks and Egyptians believed that a vein led directly to the heart from the left ring finger - the vena amoris. This belief would explain the wedding ring on the left ring finger. However, according to the Bible (Exodus 15.6) the right hand is the good and blessed side , so that the wedding ring should be worn on the right ring finger.
It is therefore hard to find a clear answer to the question "Wedding ring - right or left?". The answer depends on the country and culture where one lives and has grown up. Germany has adopted the habit of wearing the wedding ring on the right hand and the engagement ring on the left.
In fact, the hand on which you wear your wedding ring also depends on your personal preferences and habits. A wedding ring is always a symbol of eternal love and the deep bond of marriage, whether it is worn on the left or right hand. ;D

RE:
Ring on the right or left ring finger?!?
Why is it that I've seen people wear their wedding ring on their right and others wear theirs on their left? I thought that it was just the right hand. And where does the engagement ring go after the wedding ring has been put on? Does it stay on with the wedding ring or what?

The husband wears the wedding ring on his left ring finger while the Wife wears it on her left ring finger. The engagement ring is also inserted on the same left ring finger and once they are married the wedding ring is just inserted on the same left ring finger.

It is not traditionally on the left or right, but varies from where you come from. Unfortunately, this is another example of Americans thinking that a wedding ring is traditionally on the left hand the world over, because that is the custom in America. In fact, many other countries it is not traditional. They wear wedding rings on the right hand, and these are some of the countries that do so:
Austria, Bulgaria, Colombia, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India (mostly for men), Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Perú, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

Traditionally, the wedding and/or engagement rings go on the LEFT hand. You wear the engagement ring on the left hand until you get married and then you're supposed to put your wedding band on and then your engagment- so that after you're married, the engagement ring sitson top of the wedding band.
I've never heard of wearing your wedding rings on your right hand and personally I think it sounds odd. I wouldn't think that someone was married if I saw a ring on their right hand- I'd just think it was a right hand ring. For instance, I have a 1/3 carat diamond solitaire ring on my right hand, but I have my 1/2 carat engagement and my diamond wedding band on my left hand. The righthand ring does look anything like an engagment ring though (it was a family diamond that I took from a necklace and put it in a ring).

The wedding ring should be worn on the left hand. It's up to you what you do with your engagement ring once you're married but most people leave it on the same finger as they're wedding ring.
