I have a son who is in primary 3,now he is turning 9 years old.
I worried that he is being different from other kids of his age because until now he's drinking milk from the feeding bottle, aside from that he's also using his empty milk bottle as a pacifier, whenever he is at home and whatever he is doing he will take his bottle and suck it.My husband and I were worried because even how often we convinced him he will still do the way he used to be.

That is way too old, your need to break him of his habits. Dont take the bottle away from him at once. Your going to have to work with him, If he dont know how to drink from a cup already then teach him that and try to give him a cup to drink out of more often then the bottle. Then get rid of all the bottles but one, then keep sticking with that and work with him to throw the bottle away.
Sucking on the bottle as a pacifier is going to mess up his teeth big time. Plus it is not good for him to be sucking on an empty bottle. Cause he is 9 its going to be harder to break him from the bottle cause he is used to it and he thinks its normal and okay. If you need help consult a Doctor on some other tips to help you out.

Sounds like he's using the sucking for comfort. My son's 11 years old, Autism, and still oral, BUT he's not allowed a bottle. You have to redirect it. Sounds like your son may be doing this for an "oral" fix, which happens in quite a few kids. It could also be that he's having some emotional things going on that this is like a security blanket for him.

If he still insists on nursing, find a replace...the baby bottle pop candy for instance or a lolly pop. And limit the time and duration that he can fill this urge to suck. Don't belittle him, but set up ground rules.

1) you can only do this at home
2) bottle, or whatever oral device, only allowed for 5 minutes. After that you have to pick another activity.

Then you slowly change the time limit, like from 5 minutes, to maybe 3 and so on. Then you redirect the behavior.

If this continues despite what you're doing, you may need to have him talk to a therapist about this. Sometimes our children will tell someone else things they won't tell their parents. If he's sucking a bottle, there's a reason for it. It could be emotional, like I said before, or just an oral stimulation thing going on, but there is something.

Every child reacts differently to social surroundings. He could be using the bottle as a "security blanket", it may make him feel safe and give him comfort.

You should call his or any pediatrician and tell them of the situation. But, for now let him use the bottle until the both of you figure out "why he still needs it"; obviously, I am not a doctor but taking something that he depends on could make him worse or be traumatizing to him.

Am I miss reading this or did you say your 9 year old is basically drinking out of a baby bottle?? What?? Are you Insane?? What kind of parent are you??? Give me a break...NO drinking out of or sucking on a bottle isn't normal for a 3 year old why in the world would it be normal for a 9 year old!!!!!!!!!!
Why don't you actually be a parent and take the crap away? Throw it out...get rid of them all...he will get used to it! Try stepping up and being a real parent and stop neglecting your responsibilities to your son!

**You should get into trouble for neglecting your son...and not teaching him basic things a 9 year old should know!! Do you still have him in diapers too???**

My 9 year old daughter does her own laundry, cleans up after herself, dresses herself, showers by herself, takes care of her dog, and DOES NOT drink out of a baby bottle!!!! And she has some medical problems........so where is your excuse?? You don't have one...you are just a lazy parent that lets your child run your life!!!

My son used to always have milk at bedtime to put himself to sleep, and he drank it out of a bottle until he was 7. I let him do it because he drank it as he was falling asleep and otherwise he couldn't drink it lying down. When I got with my partner, he helped me change the routine. We basically got him to drink it from a cup before he lay down and he got used to it.

Sucking on an empty bottle causes a lot of gas to build up in the stomach. Tell him, it's not good for him. I don't know how you are going to take the bottles away. It is bound to really freak him out.

The best way would be to get him to decide for himself so tell him he's too old. Tell him it's bad for his teeth and it's unhealthy to suck air into your tummy. Get him to agree to throw them away. Or tell him you are going to throw them away and negotiate with him when it will happen. Of course he won't want to stop, he's built up a habit, but the longer it goes on imagine how hard it will be to stop then.
Find out if anything is worrying him. Be understanding or his nervous habits will get worse. But yes, you will have to do something. Be firm but kind. Good Luck!

P.S- I've heard of women who breastfeed their child until they are 12 so don't worry, it could be worse!!!!!

He misses being a baby. Treat him like he's way older then his age. If he asks for a bottle of milk, then just walk away, so he'd have to get it himself or not have any milk. If you keep doing that, then he'll know your jsut not going to get it for him, and he'll stop asking for milk. Hide the bottles. So he can't have them.

Yeah, there is a problem there. What i did when my daughter was 1 1/2 i threw those things out. if you don't have them then they can't use and/or find them....get him one of those water bottle things or even a water bottle that looks like a sippy cup. maybe that would help wane him. why are you sending him to school with bottles?

Have you ever seen the Dr. Phil show? There was this twenty something year old girl that couldn't sleep without this blanket she got as a little kid. I think she was going to get some help. Maybe when your son is a bit older, you should take him to a professional.

You could remove all the recipients he could use for that from the house and help him find another way of relaxing, feeling safe and nurtured. Try to spend more time with him, to keep his mind out of this, and he will give up. Don't make him feel bad or inferior, but explain him it's not all right for his age.
