The type of dog depends also on the behavior of the owner. If a potential owner wants a lively dog a terrier would be nice. If he wants a dog to guard his home he should get a doberman or a rottweiler. But a good apartment dog which will not hurt the neighbors' ears would be a papillon, Yorkshire terrier, or a Boston terrier

I live in an apartment with my doberman. You can have pretty much any kind of breed as long as you're willing to do what it takes to keep them happy. My dog needs a lot of exercise, and luckily there is a dogpark near my apt, so it doesn't bother her that she can't run all over the place inside. Dobies can be great apt dogs, they always want to be with you, you just have to be willing to take them running or biking or something. I'm also a fan of corgies, they're a herding breed, but don't require as much space as most.

I have 3 dogs in my apt. A small labX and 2 Shih-tzus. We have lots of dogs in our complex and from what I've noticed most of the time when I hear dogs yapping it's usually the smaller ones that tend to be noisier. Shih-tzus are relatively quiet though.

I guess it really depends on how much time you can spend exercising the dog. If you don't have much time to take the dog out for long walks or to run in the park, then a smaller dog would be better (my Shih-tzus would be happy with just a short little walk to do their business, they tend to get plenty of exercise inside playing with each other).

If you have enough energy to own one, a Pom is a great house dog, but they get a little loud, so if you live in an old apartment with thin walls, you still may catch a little nagging about their barks. They aren't destructive, they're very easy to train, and you'll definitely always know when someone is anywhere near your door.

Something small, not yappy and can be litter trained. Yes, you can litter train a dog.

Most any dog is suitable with the exception of herding dogs. They need lots of space and excercise.

Are you going to have a dog there just for the sake of having a dog? Then I'd try to re-consider.... Poor puppies...
