It could be. Hoarseness is a symptom of cancer. My mom died of lung and bone cancer a year ago, and one of the first symptoms was hoarseness. Especially if you're mom smokes (or used to) or if the hoarseness continues for more than a week, please have her see a doctor as soon as possible.

no, it happens to me a lot, its usually just a mild virus, like a cold. if it doesn't get better in a few days, or she develops a fever or sore throat, take her to the doctor. until then encourage her to drink warm liquids its probably just a mucus build up on her vocal cords

there may be nothing much we can do, but go and check her throat from an ENT specialist. Her voice box might be having some problem...

yes it is worrisome
you worry about nerve problems
you worry the thyroid gland is enlarged
it doesn't have to be painful
especially if she was a smoker, take her to a doctor.
