No.
There is no need for a passport for any country it is just the fact that a passport is the only internationally recognized form of ID. There is some confusion about the Queen's status regarding passports.

To clarify: To enter a country you require an internationally recognized form of ID. The only international recognized forms of ID currently are Passports but other forms will be available, hence the answer is NO. Consider if you lose your passport whilst in a foreign country, they will issue you with paperwork to substantiate that you are who you say you are and they become the recognized form of ID (NOT a PASSPORT). The reason for stating the queen is the argument of she is internationally recognized so doesn't require a passport . The queries arise in mainland Europe where agreements will be in place for the forms of ID required to pass across borders.

Travellers to Australia need a valid passport or similar certificate of identification. Everyone, except travellers with Australian or New Zealand passports, requires a visa or an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) to enter Australia. New Zealand passport holders apply for a visa upon arrival in Australia. All other passport holders must hold a visa or ETA before travelling to Australia.

Yes, you will need a passport from your home country and an Australian visa (permit to enter) from an Australian embassy.

see link below to the U.S. State Department's website

There are only a few countries (Canada, Mexico, Panama, some Carribean islands) that still permit U.S. citizens to travel with only a birth certificate & driver's license. Note: this will be changing in 2007.

I believe that any time you leave US soil, you have to have your passport. You can always contact a travel agent in your area to get more info. Unfortunately, I do not know of any websites since I always take my driver's license and passport when I leave the US.

No. But you will need one to get out of the airport. And you will need one once you get back to the USA so you can leave the airport there.
