Kneeling is a traditional sign of respect. It doesn't always have that meaning now-a-days, but it is still part of the Catholic culture.

Having said that, the rubrics of the mass (the official instructions) also state that no one HAS to take a posture (for example, kneeling or genuflecting) that presents a physical problem for them. For example, my pastor has poor knees and will often make a reverant bow instead of genuflecting when he is having trouble with them. During the mass, if kneeling is not comfortable for anyone, they are more than welcome to sit and pray.

At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “Take this bread. It is my body.” Then he said, “Take this and drink. This is my blood. Do this in memory of me.”

Catholics believe this was the First Eucharist, that through some miracle the bread and wine actually became the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

Catholics reenact the Last Supper during every Mass, where God, acting through the priest, changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

If you were in the same room as the real physical Jesus Christ then would you not kneel in awe and reverence too?

With love in Christ.
