To my understanding of the flood event, Noah was a man of righteousness. It took him years to build the ark. Maybe he preached to the people the whole time, trying to get them to change their ways.

My mother feels that the whole story of Noah's Ark is not true , sort of a story created to explain what happened, but that one must be careful in how they interpreted the bible.

God is actually one of the laziest beings in the universe. Sure, he could have gotten up that morning and did as you suggest.
