My son is 10, and I don't think he is mature enough, but I have heard from friends that they let their sons go home, after school, as they get a snack and drink and operate the Microwave. Is it me as I think is the maturity level and gender, but what is YOUR answer? Thanks, I greatly appreciate it, very much! As, next year my son will be in Middle school, and no YMCA Program for before and after School, so don't know what I am going to do! Love to know your answers! ((((((HUGS))))))

5th or 6th grade.......you bet! They need to learn some independence and responsibility before going to middle school.....start with having him stay home while you run to the store.......let him think hes coming home from school alone and just hide in the tub...relax, take a nap....then surprise him, he won't even know you were there.

Honestly this usually has more to do with the parents than the kids. Relax, you trained him right didn't you.......now let him test his wings.....I always made sure my kids knew which neighbors to run to and such and that it was cool with the neighbors.

I have three boys now, 12, 14 and 15. I started letting them stay home alone when they were 5th, 6th and 7th grades. Granted, I had three kids that would watch out for each other, but if he is in middle school, I definetely think he is old enough, especially, if its just after school.

I would just give him a set of rules, not to open the door, no friends over when your not there, no cooking on the stove, just the microwave, etc. Maybe start, by leaving him alone when you go to the store and make little trips away and then build up to the after school thing. Also, if you know any stay home neighbors, let them know you son is staying home after school and they will keep an eye out.

We have 2 boys, ages 11 and 10 and there is NO WAY they would be allowed to be home alone. They can't even play out in the backyard unsupervised for 10 minutes without getting into some sort of trouble.

I think 10 is old enough if for a short while. A couple hours should be fine if he has someone to contact if he needs help of any sort. My kids were closer to 12 before I felt ok to leave them for more than an hour. Grandma lived close enough to come over if they had a problem.

Hi, im a 15 year old and my mom let me stay home when i turned 10. i was allowed to use the microwave only for small things. no popcorn or anything that could easily catch fire. I think you should let him stay home once but for a short period of time and if he is ok just extend the period of time you let him stay home.

i think it might be a good idea to have a neighbor or a teen ager with your child.
Many have to fuinction alone but it is far from an idea situation.
