like tonight I was standing in line for a concert and somebody came up to me and gave me some free tickets because he changed his mind about going to it ... should I have given him some money for them, or would that have been an insult?

Absolutely not, it would have been strange for you to offer to pay for them unless he was attempted to sell them to you.

But if he gave them to you, just thank them wholeheartedly.... it makes people feel good to give things to others.

Yes, I'd feel obligated to return the favor, if it's sb. I know. In your situation, I would definitely offer to pay something. If he refuses, then I guess a heartfelt "thank you" would suffice.

What did you do? Are you feeling guilty 'cuz you didn't offer to pay?

It would have been polite and good manners to at least offer to pay him for them. I hope you at least thanked him. Why would it be an insult to return a kindness? It's not like he knew you and was giving you a birthday present. lol

Say thank you and try to offer him something in return... if he will not accept it, then just smile and get his name and cp number... who knows later you will be the one to offer him in return instead!

In this case there is no need to reciprocate. He obviously has no use for it and he randomly gives it away to someone who might want it.
