I just finished watching "Water" an Indian movie about the oppression widows in their society must face. Religious beliefs keep these women (34 million as of 2001) alienated from society, suffering poverty many of which resort to prostitution to survive.

These women are by afflicted by a stigma & religious belief system that keeps them from remarrying. It takes brave individuals to stand up to dysfunctional religious beliefs, even if some "holy" text prescribes such modes of living.

This begs the question, what other things do we believe because a book, cultural, & or tradition tells us so? I once followed more so religious texts than my conscience. My conscience began to pang, so hard that I literally felt like I was drowning. Thank God I listened to the wisdom that was in my heart then perpetuating suffering via legalism.

I encourage all others to do the same by bravely speaking out against any idea, regardless of its source, which causes more suffering than alleviation.

Your conscience and faith should coincide with each other. If they don't, you need to take another look at your beliefs.

Conscience

We should consider that book, culture, and tradition manifest the conscience of an individual(s) or a society in certain point of time and region. Religion & spiritual guidance, as they serve as a place where mankinds can turn to in their seeking of truth, enlightenment, etc, etc, should also consider and embrace human's conscience since it's an inseparatable part of living & thinking beings. In short, conscience is our soul's voice to respond to our surrounding and situation.

The bible is misinterpreted & taken much too literally, I value *some* of the moral teachings in it as well as those in other religious texts. It should only be used as a guideline...we were given the gift of reason...for a reason.
It's sad what folks do in the name of religion Or do & blame religion.
