On previous trips to the Caribbean I have always taken an extra suitcase filled with school supplies or children's clothing and dropped it off at a school. I'm travelling to BKK in November of this year and have developed some contacts in the clothing industry and with manufacturers of school supplies and I'm quite confident I can put together a LARGE quantity of donated items - perhaps as much as a container load.

What I'm wondering is if there is an organization in BKK that could assist with the distribution. I certainly don't want to stand on a street corner giving away school supplies out of the back of a truck. The pandemonium alone would get me locked up !!!

If you have any suggestions or contacts in this regard, it would be very much appreciated, along with some candid (brutally honest, if necessary) comments on whether or not this is a good idea, if it would be an offense to the Thai culture, etc.

Your comments are VERY much appreciated. THANKS TO ALL!!

There are many poor rural schools in Thailand that can use school supplies, I know of few myself in the Ranong area, very poor primary schools. However how do you plan to get the items to Thailand, international flights do have weight limits and the extra cost is very high for an extra suitcase or box. You can contact me if you like to donate any items to the poor secondary schools in Ranong. I live in Bangkok but I spent at least one week every month in Ranong. I wish you luck. PS It would not be an offense to offer items to the people or the schools.

Few weeks ago, an 18 yrs old American student had distributed books and toys donated from his sponsors in US to the Thai school and students in the remote province in the Northeast of Thailand. I guess from the picture posted in the Bangkok Post, that the stuff would be at least close to a full truck load. I don't know how he made it, but he did a very admirable good job. The guy had impressed local people including those who had learned it from newspaper.

For your case, I don't know how much you want to ship to Thailand, if it's small amount and you can carry by your own in the plan then you can contact any of the registered organizations in Thailand where you can make sure the stuffs will be proper distributed to those who're in need. I can do the research for you if you give me more information about your stuff.

If the amount is as much as a container load, then I'd be very happy to help you contact my friends who're senior government offcials in the in The Ministry of education and Ministry of Interior. They would give better advice where and what we should do.

Should I be of any help please let me know.

I have done this often on my return trips here. It is in no way offensive for Thai people and quite the contrary, it is considered a very thoughtful and fine thing to do - "giving" is considered near the top of hte list of character traits.. Rural areas are in much greater need than bkk.. go for smaller sizes and childrens clothing..

Shipping a container load is an expense.. I always would bring an extra bag that would bring me up to my weight limit for the airline. If you need help w/this feel free to contact me.

I would suggest you to give to Karen Refugee Camps around Tak area or Karenni refugee camp around Mae Hong Song area. For more informaion you can google to get the list of refugee camp which are related with Burma.
There are alot of Burmese refugee who are in need in Thailand. I have to fled their place because Military Regime. There are several kids that cannot have education. So several NGOs and camps set up school in the camp to give education to those poor people.
Or you can contact with Free Burma Ranger Group in order to help you donate your stuffs. Or you can contact with UNHCR (Thailand)
