It has 188000 miles, its an automatic. It seems like everything is in good condition except the trans of course. Does anyone know how much a used trans would roughly cost?

My Uncle is a mechanic, he can do any work. It is just a matter of parts.

VW Auto trannies are known to have problems. European car makers are 40 years behind the US since they sell nearly no auto boxes in Europe.
Best bet is to find a salvage yard and have it replaced. You can go anywhere from $300 to $1,000 depending on what and where.
Beware that a used one will likely fail itself especially after sitting.

most of the time transmission problems are the worst thing that can go wrong in a car.. i would check with a few local chops on how much, then ask a few junkyards if they would...

if you said that your uncle is a mechanic he probably know were u could get a use transmission here a tip get it on the scrap yard it cheaper
