We had just moved house and was gathering material for a compound. My G-friend let them both out of the garage early Sat morning, was checking them every 20mins or so (as you do with jumpy dogs) and he wouldn't come when called (not like him). So we went for a drive and found him at the front of the house over our back fence with a sheet over him. Thakyou whoever you are for showing enough decency to stop, let alone drape a sheet over him. It was much appreciated by my girlfreind and I when we found him.

This is something that most people don't understand, there have been millions of dogs tht have died because they lost their companion to death, and wouldn't do anything. Most people think that dogs are like us, greive and then get over it, but that's not the way it is. Theyt grieve so bad that they stop doing everything. eating playing and all the in between. they want to either pace or sleep all day and have no life left in them. The greiving can go so far that they will die depending on how close they were to the other dog. If i were you and didn't want another dead dog i would get another one and fast, that's the only way your poor thing will recoup. I hope you can get it all sorted out, even in several dog families you usually need to replace the deceiced, it's odd but what happens.... Take care

That is a decision for your heart. Your other dog will appreciate the new friend, but if you aren't ready, then take your time.. whatever you decide will be the correct choice..
Dogs do not mourn the same as people, and will usually be back to normal about 3 weeks after a trauma..
If your dog loves other dogs, then he will enjoy another friend now..

I'm so sorry for your loss. A loss of a pet is just as traumatic as losing a close human friend/family member. For your own sake, I think you should wait. You still have a dog, a dog that still loves you and still needs your attention. As for your 6 year old, some say that animals have complex emotions and mourn the loss of "friends." I believe that this is true. Animals do mourn. I think you should wait. Give your dog some support and love and someday, you'll both be ready.

When we had our older dog put down a few years ago, the other dog quit eating, slept all day, and refused to do anything.

We had to get another dog by day 5...it worked :)
They can't talk in words, but they are still saddened by the loss

Dogs/animals mourn like people do. I wouldn't get a dog right away, let him go through his grieving process first. He might lash out at the new dog.

No, it is not wise. Your dog is grieving. Please give the dog extra care and love and understanding.

In time your dog may wish another companion, but to immediately "substitute" for the pup who was killed works as well as trying to replace a sibling that was killed.

After a period of time, your dog may wish another companion, but watch carefully until the grieving process eases....

And please - keep your dogs confined &/or leased in the future. Not a criticism, just....

dogs can grieve just like humans! be kind to your dog and spend some time with him, instead of diverting your attention towards a new pet.

well sorry about your loss, but your older dog seems more upset about it than you. How was your pup hit by a car? anyways you should mourn a little and then think about adopting one

perhaps. You can do the whole transition quickly but it might shock your other dog. if you do get another dog make sure you get it from an animal shelter!!!
