I sleep at 10:30p.m., all tired, but when I get on the bed, I feel totally awake. I slowly get tired and fall asleep when it's 3-5 a.m. and wake at 12. School is starting, and if I continue this I'll be late! I'm not supposed to take pills- what should I do?

I don't drink, I hate caffeine, I tried counting numbers, my parents will kill me if I watch T.V. in the middle of the night, I never take naps, I wake up at the middle of the night at 4 or 6 when I can sleep, I have a cat, I think to much, I eat dinner at 6-8, we eat fruits at 8-9 [It's a habit for our family], I get so tired during days, I think I see ghosts, and my parents sleep too, so they will kill me if I wake them up in the middle of the night with music, I sweat, and I get excited, when I think too much. My cell phone also rings for no reason, and I get nerves for no reason.

Try reading or watching television until you fall asleep. Also try exercising in the evening, eating an early dinner and going to bed earlier.

I have the same problem.
What I try to do is try to not have any kind of sugar or caffine after five and don't eat after eight. That way your stomach has time to digest and settle down so it won't keep you awake. Another idea is to be more active during the day so you're a little more tired, but don't wear yourself out or continue after five. If you're still exercising until you go to bed, you'll still be pumped up so it'll take you a longer time to go to sleep as well. Also, if it's too light inside your room, that may be a problem as well. Try putting some darker curtains up if that's the case, or if it's too quite, just put some soft music on. I've found that music with lyrics distracts me too much and makes me want to sing along, though, so maybe try to get some CDs that just have nature sounds or just has the music.

Boy everyone jumped on this with some very interesting answers I might add!!
What I try to do is get involved in some activity I've been putting aside, such as reading a magazine article I've been meaning to read, working on a letter to someone you've been meaning to write, working on that drawing I've been putting aside===you catch my drift.
Even if I don't sleep right away, it isn't long before I have really tired out my brain, and I'm dragging myself to the bed in gratefulness.
Even if it takes a bit, you'll surely sleep well if you push yourself
doing something you normally put off. And if it doesn't work, at least you weren't tossing and turning, and something productive has come from your sleeplessness. Repeat this routine, and the problem will handle itself! Your body will even itself out! Sweet Dreams!!

What do you mean your not supposed to take pills? A medical condition, or general belief that medication is bad?

Anyway, you could be having anxiety at night, causing you to stay awake. If you want a natural alternative to rest, try some melatonin from the health food store. They sell them in pill and gum-losenge form so it hit's the blood stream faster. It's safe and effective.

But really, I'd recommend you see a doctor. You might try a prescription sleep aid or other medication to help you get to sleep. And you may only have to be on it temporarily to get your sleep pattern back in line. So try to keep an open mind. :)

I have a similar problem. I'm a mom, and I find it hard to sleep due to what if my 3 year-old wakes me up wanting something.

Someone gave me a relaxation tape, and it works WONDERS. I'd be out before the whole thing is over. If you don't want to buy one, you can try and see about borrowing one from a library in your area. A CD would be more practical so you don't have to wake up to turn sides. If you can't find it in stores, see if you can get it over amazon.com

While listening to the tape, think about something happy and pleasant if you can, like your boyfriend, or where you wish you can be, just a couple examples.

Also, like another poster said, avoid caffeine after a certain time.

wake up early even if you went to bed late and dont take any naps during the day. Hopefully by the time you go to bed you will just fall right to sleep.

Try working out during the day or being active. That will probably tire you out. Also try waking up very early, and going to bed right when you feel tired. It works for me during Summer-back to school transitions.

I have the same problem except that lately sometimes I do not even go to sleep. I have classes in the morning and sometimes I just go to class without sleep and sleep when i get home.

Personally I think it is all in the head, our clocks are in the wrong time.

Stop having caffeine after 5pm, be more active during the day so you'll be ready to rest at night. Don't hang out in your room, let it be a place of rest.
