This question depresses me more than learning he was killed. I can only hope he knew Jesus Christ.

I've never seen it noted on public record what religion he is. I would imagine with his humanistic views on the world and environment etc, he'd be an atheist. I guess we'll soon know if they go ahead with the state funeral. If he does believe in a heaven, then no doubt he will be surrounded by his mother, the tortoise Harriet who died not long ago, and millions of his animal friends.

He comes from a country who's constitution is set to not, nor ever have, a state religion. His views on religion were never publicized, but he seems most likely to think of nature as his primary concern, to almost religious proportions, seeing the beauty in even the most dangerous creature.
