I put my cat to sleep because she could not see and she could hardly walk due to arthritis. Why can't I show the same compassion for my 80 year old bed-ridden mother who has no idea who she is?

Debra- I'm sure my cat would have wanted to live also.

Don-yes the law defines killing a human as murder and putting an animal to sleep as humane. But, human beings are animals, and we suffer just as do our pets. Why are we required to sustain the pain?

Hello? Grandma is not your cat.

We don't know what God has for old people in our lives or the lives of others. It is not our choice to choose when a human soul goes to meet it's maker.

IT is not the same as a beloved pet. Your cat cannot pray for you or others even though it cannot talk.

We have 3 cats and I know that the day may come if one has a stroke that I may have to have it put down. I would never consider the same thing for my mom, if she is incapacitated.

This is what the whole abortion thing has brought us to, a devaluing of all human life. AHHHHHHHHHHHH Come quickly Lord Jesus and deliver us from this life.

Because sometimes people live even after everyone is certain they will die. Because sometimes a moment of lucidity is worth a lifetime of anguish. I personally know a woman who at 34 years-old was told she had weeks or perhaps months to live after being diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. So she went home to be with her family and die. That was nine years ago. She is healthy and has been working full-time ever since then. While making the mistake for a pet is terrible, making a mistake for a person is unacceptable. But that chance does not make it any easier for you or your mother.

I wish there were a better choice and that we understood better. I wish we could count on doctors being right all the time or that we were right about our own health all the time. But unfortunately we are not right all the time. It may be that your mother may suffer and never regain lucidity right up to the time she dies. How awful that reality is. But how awful to think of ending a life and permanently cutting-short the possibility of a moment of lucidity or the smile of a fond memory rattling around her head. It is so sad either way.

I don't believe we should keep people suffering when there is no hope. I wouldn't want it to happen to me and I wish it wasn't happening to your mother. But there is no one on this Earth that I feel safe trusting with that choice, not even myself when in the grip of that sorrow and pain. So for myself I turn to religion and the comfort that all this suffering will seem like just a moment followed by an eternity of comfort and joy. While some may say that is a foolish belief based on ignorance, I choose to believe it is a comfort in a world of great suffering where there is precious little comfort to be found. God bless you and your mother in your journey to find peace.

First of all I am very sorry about your Mother... I watched my mom die a long, painful death from cancer just recently. She wanted to be "put to sleep", and I stood by helplessly and could do nothing about it. I know the religious people out there will put my point of view down, however, everyone has a right to their beliefs. I would never have "held a gun to my mother's head and blow her brains out - I LOVE HER!!!". There is a matter of respect held here. MY MOTHER would have appreciated the feeling of no pain, and the ease of just falling asleep and not waking up. She was in so much pain, and so afraid of how she was dying, it really was horrible! So... my "personal" belief - If a terminally ill person requests it, it should be their right! It is time to put things into perspective here people!!!

Because we place a much highre value on human life than on animal life. It was not a great loss to society when you put the cat down, but the loss of a human life would be much more so. So, we let the old folks grow older and suffer, except in Oregon.

Because the PETA people haven't dominated the Govt so far. The evolutionists will soon get their way and you won't be able to put your cat to sleep, but your Mom yes..
By evolutionary thinking that evolutionists are primates in a modern form, then taking that a step farther, we should be able to put evolutionists to sleep. So asking the sick person if they are christian or evolutionist you can determine whether to put them down or not??
Fish are our friends, we shouldn't eat them??? that is what they say..Me I like a good fish taco..

I believe that we should treat animals and humans with love and compassion. I believe that humans should be euthanised by their own request. For some people their quality of life is gone.

Because no matter how much someone suffers or wants to die God says we can't help them. But then again the same people who would use this argument could justify wars and capital punishment. Who said the world makes sense?

How are you sure she wants this? And why do you think her life does not still have meaning? And sorry about your mother. I work in a nursing home and I see many in such a shape but most would still seek to live.

Because, for too long, the ideas of good and evil have been reversed by false prophets. Today's society has a very twisted idea of right and wrong, colored intensely by the so-called "Judeo-Christian" ethic, which is in fact the fault of the Christian Church. Satan stands for love and respect to those who deserve it. Hail Satan!

The laws are stupid. If I was that damn sick, I'd prefer to "go to sleep"..or "medically-assisted suicide"...don't you think that would be the most humane? But it seems that our lawmakers want people to suffer..and have to pay out the **** for medical services just to prolong more suffering. I feel medically-assisted suicide should be legal for people who are terminally ill.
