I always do research and bring in print outs or other ads for the same car. I find the car i want and have them give me their best price. Then you can say well i saw it cheaper as Dealer XX. I have purchased 2 new cars with this tatic and most of the time the dealer will say he will beat the price. Ask how much and then show him the print outs. Make sure that the offers are real as they may check.

You've already gotten some good advice on how to negotiate, but I'll include some advice on how NOT to negotiate:

1) Don't negotiate on an empty stomach or when you are tired

2) Don't tell the salesman you LOVE the car

3) Don't tell the salesman you NEED the car

4) Don't negotiate monthly payment unless you have done research and know the price the payment is based on

5) Don't negotiate down from sticker price, negotiate up from invoice price

6) Don't negotiate at the beginning of a month, the beginning of a quarter, the beginning of a model year, or the beginning of a day. There are exceptions, but your odds are better when the dealer needs your business to make last minute sales goals.

edmunds.com has a feature called the TMV, or True Market Value. This number reflects the price that the average person pays for the vehicle that you have chosen. You may not be able to negotiate below this number, but most people are able to get to this value by simply showing the dealer a printout. There is a lot more advice on the site about negotiating prices for cars.

Definitely do your online research BEFORE going to any dealership. Once you go, they suck you in. Definitely have an idea in your head of what the sticker price is on the vehicle you want and also what you're actually willing to pay for that particular vehicle. Do not give in or back down. It is a salesman's job to make not only himself, but also the dealership money. This is good and fine, but YOU ultimately have control over how much they will make and what you pay. If they refuse and refuse to give you the deal you want and you feel it's reasonable, walk away. Salesman HATE that and will do just about anything to keep you in the showroom. Expect possible intimidation tactics and big egos...seems to go with the business. Stand firm and don't be swayed. It is, after all, going to be YOUR car that YOU'RE paying for!

as a car mechanic/dealer/ salesman, the best deal is the one you are happy with. i have had people haggle me down to nothing and are still never satisfied. my experience is that those that pay more forsome reason have fewwer proplems down the line. general rule: at a dealership, the price is marked up around $3000 over costs. $1000 to give away, $1000 to over allow on your trade, $1000 profit. negotiate your interest rate, extended warranties and never, i mean neveer take accident/life coverage. it is the most expensive insurance to purchase. those selling from the paper are usually deaqlers, not private individuals. BEWARE!!!! and ALLWAYS!! have thevehichle check out by trusted mechanic before you finalize a deal.

well if ur going to a used car lot-- i say-- find little things wrong with the car-- like a tear in the seat-- some rust underneath --window is hard to roll down an then be like well-- see a car for this kinda money wouldnt have these flaws--- an then more than likely theyll drop a little bit-- but a new car place--lol good luck--- the prices are stuck my uncle works for a new car lot-- an there not allowed to go down on the price an if they get caught they can get in a lot of trouble--- also if ur a chick--- go for a man to sell u the car-- showing a little cleavage never killed someone!

always start a lot lower than you would actually be willing to pay for it because the seller will always try to cut you a "deal" and sell it to you for slightly less than what he originally said then you slowly raise your price and eventually you win
