I was looking for parking at the beach. A spot opened up on the opposite side of the street so I proceeded to cross a double yellow line. As I put the car into P i was approached by a cop and given a ticket.

Can I fight this at all?
If not what is the typical fine for such an infraction?

I think that if the law allows them to suspend your license, they will. What you did was extremely dangerous. Double yellow lines mark areas of no passing, no turning, etc. because the road conditions make it very dangerous to do it there. On top of that, you passed a large truck that you couldn't see around. Luckily, you did not die or kill someone in a head-on collision. The consequences for minors are harsher, because they are more likely to do these things without thinking it through. We want you to live, so we want to make an impression on you with a harsh punishment. Please be more thoughtful when you drive again.

I bet someone got into a real accident while he was writing that ticket.

Real men and women, in REAL states, don't need stupid laws against crossing the double yellow line. All we need is a law that states anyone who causes an accident because of crossing the line is at fault.

He probably got you for a U turn. A double yellow line in my state a well as all other 49 means no passing in both directions

read your dmv handbook. In CA double yellow line is a no no. No cars can cross it. If one yellow line, you can make a left turn. If the lines are broken (_ _ _ _) then you can make a left or u turn...
