The salt and acidity cut through the fat from the cheese or meat on the sandwich. It is meant as a palate cleanser and not to continue to traumatize you. My dad HATES them too....
This was more than likely started in early Deli's in New York, Boston, Philly, etc.
I would from this point on assume that any time you order a sandwich while dining out, that a pickle will be added.... insist that it does not come with your meal and ask your server to make sure you don't get one.
Hope that this answer helps clear things up for you. And sorry for the inconvenience.
PS: I hope that I didn't sound sarcastic, I just wanted to give a clear answer :-)

can I have your pickle if your not eating it?
I think it has to do with some concept in western cooking that you should have something green on your plate. Since pickles are easiest to store, they are the easiest green thing you can serve. If they didn't serve pickles they would probably serve parsley instead, and then I'd have to hunt you down since I love pickles and hate parsley :)

you seriously need therapy to help you deal with the pickle monster...and most menus that I have seen do state somewhere that the sandwiches are served with pickles, chips, drink, whatever....usually it is under the main heading, not with the actual product....besides...pickles are good with grilled cheese sandwiches...

It is there to cleanse the pallet. if you ask to remove the pickle while ordering they will not put it on there for you.
