Ok. First of all, do you want a Siberian or and Alaskan husky? The only AKC registered breed is the Siberian. Alaskans are kind of a glorified mutt.

Here's the real difference. Siberians are bred for looks and Alaskans are bred for running ability. Though they share many qualities, a purebred Siberian is a poor choice for a sled team while an Alaskan is certainly no show dog, though many are just as beautiful as their Siberian relatives.

An Alaskan husky is mostly husky but may be bred with other breeds. A true Siberian will only have Siberian parents.

Do you realize that Siberian or Alaskan, a husky is built for running? You may need a good fence to keep your dog safe. Huskies are not known for their loyalty and will run if given the chance. (though there are a few exceptions, this is something you need to be prepared to deal with.) Also are you prepared to deal with a husky's energy? They are very energetic dogs and will not be content to be your lap dog or play fetch with you. They are independant. That's not to say you can't train them. You can, but don't expect them to play fetch for hours or follow along after you wherever you go. My dog listens to me and does what I tell her, but she makes sure I know it was her own idea in the first place. Another MUST for getting a husky is giving them space to run, or exercising them frequently. Huskies do not do well without plenty of room to run.

If you are prepared for the constant activity a husky will bring to your life, and have lots of room for one, I would suggest contacting the local AKC for a Siberian, and if you would rather have an Alaskan (my personal preferance, as they can be a bit more loyal if they are mixed with a little lab or retreiver) your best bet would be a dog sledding club. They'll know who's dog has puppies or will soon and they'll be able to point you in the direction of a good dog for your needs.

Best of luck with your puppy adventures!

Most areas have "rescue organizations" for different breeds of dogs. Check that out and save an animal instead of buying one.

The FIRST place to "look" is the AKC site-where you'll discover that THERE'S ****NO SUCH THING****!!!

It's JUST siberian!!!!
