Good grief, what a lot of stupid comments in place of answers.

The American citizen must file an I-130 petition with DHS, requesting an immigrant visa for the Australian spouse. Once the petition is approved, it goes to the nearest US embassy or consulate for processing and visa issuance.

Once the immigrant visa is issued, the Australian goes to the US, enters as an immigrant, and can immediately apply for work, school, social security card, etc.

The process can be speeded up if the American also files an I-129F along with the I-130 (it's goofy, but it works - I issue these all the time).

Please see the references for all the details:

If they marry an american no you are not automatically able to work in the U.S. but you can live over here. My sister just married someone from Panama. They are going threw the process right now to make him legal. The person can always go to immigration to get a work permit. I'm not sure how long it takes my sister got married July 8th and is still going threw it. It takes a while. Make sure that the two people are actually getting married to each other because they love each other. You have to show pictures and everything of the wedding to immigration! Its crazy i know. Good luck on the marriage.

It's still a long and difficult process. It is going to cost the U.S. Citizen thousands of dollars and take at least 4 or more years to complete. However, the Australian can get a conditional green card and a work permit. The work permit takes at least 90 days.

Also, a lot of proof is required to validate the relationship in the eyes of the government. They expect to see years worth of letters, photographs, etc. If they think it's fake, the Australian gets deported.

NO NO NO after marriage your husband or wife files form I130 a petition for alien relative with immigration the time process varies anywhere from 6 month to one year after you are granted a visa you enter my beloved country and wait 3 long years pay your taxes live an exemplary life then you can apply to be naturalized contrary to what many belive marriage to an America citizen does not grant immidiate relocation and benefits there is a formal process and its called sponsorship, I see no reason that you would be denied

Married or not the Australian citizen would have to go thru the normal process to get a green card.

it depends on the couple, where do they wanted or prefer to reside. if in usa, either you file for fiancee visa and be married in usa within the allowable and granted visa or petition for alien relatives that the main recipient is the husband or wife. remember, you will not be able to bring your other half immediately. whenever you file for the petition, it usually takes between 6 months to a year for approval processing by INS, ensuring you file the paper works completely. the INS does not discriminate Australian citizen, where do you get that idea from? check www.uscis.gov for further details regarding immigration.

The Aussie would still have to go through the process to get a green card/work visa, and then if they wanted to, become naturalized citizens. It's just like if they were immigrating alone, but I think it's easier to get accepted if you're married....but don't take my word for it.
