I think that's a wonderful idea. I'm sure that would probably make them think twice. For some, unfortunately, they think of prison as a free ride. They get to have t.v. priveledges, hot meals, and exercise?! What?!! Why do they deserve such priveledges? That isn't a deterant to commiting crimes. If America would stop being so sissy *** and really punish people the way other countries do, for instance Singapore and Arab nations, believe me, there would be hardly anyone in prison.

Don't you think the people on the Gulf coast have been raped and looted enough?
Seriously, I don't think you understand the kind of manpower it would take just to watch the criminals and keep them under control - Not to mention actually getting them to work.
Though I do agree with the "sick and tired of clothing and feeding criminals" part. I am all for leasing the prisons to major corporations and turning them into self-supporting, profit turning work camps.

I think it's a reasonable idea, but unfortunately most prison wardens would tend to view it as a management nightmare... yes, I'm sur it has been considered but the undertaking would indeed be monumental in logistics alone and the cost of transport and security measures alone would be prohibitive unless the federal goverment would be underwriting the whole project. Still, local projects in each state might be the ticket to which you were alluding.

This is a very common misconception that prisoners do not work for their keep.
A majority of prisoners have to work for their food, clothing etc... It's called the 'Prisoner Wellfare Fund'. It comprised of money earned by the prisoner performing work and used for the aforementioned, legal consultation, it can be sent to family, etc.
Your tax money mainly goes to walls, bars, guards and guns.

the only criminals that need to be cleaning up the gulf coast are the ones who allowed that desaster to become as large as it did. whoever was in charge of bringing the levees up to date is a criminal. the police that blocked off roads and exits from the golf coast and then abandoned their own posts are criminals. fema is an organization full of excuses and criminals. george bush's lack of urgency to the katrina victims was criminal. the members of the media that portrayed u.s. citizens as refugees are criminals. the local and federal officials that are still watching the city of new orleans die are criminals. the schools that refused to take in gulf coast students are criminals. the insurance companies that still haven't acknowledged claims are criminals. THOSE criminals need to get the hell down to the south and clean up!

Well, that is a thought. It might work. Maybe reduced their time in prison. Only send the "white collar" criminals,
not the ones who murder or molest little kids.

It's a good idea, but I'd rather see the prisoners clean up their own communities.

My mom lives in Gulfport. What kind of prisoners are we talking about? If it we're for the safety issues, I agree. I think they should earn their keep and pay back society.

I think criminals should have to pay back their debt to society, but having them back out in the world where they could hurt people or escape is a little too risky.

Nah. Send them to fight our current war! If they come back alive, reduce their sentence or set them free. THAT is the hard work they deserve. I don't think they'd do a good job of the other, really, what do they care if it's not their community, family, etc.?
