I am in the Army National Guard, and I know what you're saying. Years ago, the Army sized down considerably. They made the National Guard play a large part in combat operations, and the Army Reserves play a large part in support operations.
The bad thing is, if you're active duty, you come home and you still have a job.
Technically and legally speaking, when you are in the Guard or Reserves and get deployed, your job is guaranteed when you come home. Problem is, you were probaly passed up on promotions and raises during this time. Also trying to run a household can be difficult when you're overseas. Sometimes there just isn't anywhere to turn for assistance. Employers aren't too happy anymore when you are gone for a year, or two, come home and leave a year or two later. That's is the worst part about it, people aren't going over once, now we are seeing multiple deployments.
There is a Special Forces unit in my state, and I know some of those guys have done three or four deployments. Could you imagine what kind of stress that can put on your civilian job and lifestyle.
We weren't originally designed to be a first responder to international tension, but a back-up to national security.
Sorry about rambling on, but I think you needed to hear it first hand. I think everybody does.

The National Guard serves a dual purpose. They have missions for both the State and the Federal Government.
Military Bases in the States don't need transportation units, water purification units, hospital units, & a lot of other things. All of those things are done on the base. There is no need for a bunch of truck drivers that have nothing to transport.
So, a lot of those jobs are in the National Guard to save money. Also the State Government likes having those trucks in an emergency (like a hurricane or blizzard) so that vital supplies can be transported to striken areas.
In time of war the Army needs those National Guard units overseas because there is no "Main Post" with all of the supplies, services, & buildings you need.
The National Guard is functioning in the way it was designed to function.

I agree & u r 1 of the 1st people i've heard come up with this thinking. NATIONAL GUARD means TO GUARD THE NATION. Like the HOME GUARD in the UK. Here in Canada we have the "Reserve Forces" It is their job to defend the nation as a last resort. OK, that would be useless as the only country that has ever invaded or would do so in the future would be the USA. Don't rule that out, since we have the 2nd largest oil reserves next toSaudi Arabia and the largest reserves of fresh water, as soon as George W. noticeses that CanadA ends with an "A" like CubA, SyriA, LithuaniA, just thought I would toss that in to see if you were still paying attention, we could be in deep doo-doo man. Seriously I agree with you 100%

In the event of 'National Emergency,' the National Guard can be requested by the President. They are, after all, part of the military apparatus of the country. The President, as commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, decides what a 'national emergency' is.
The first time this happened was in WW I, when President Wilson called up the Guard as the first troops to go to Europe.

Sorry, but that would be incorrect. Guard units have seen service in WW1, WW2, Korea, 'NAM, & Desert Storm. The main reason for the Guard is to provide a reserve force to the active Army & Air Force. Many critical support units are in the guard & reserve. Air tankers, MP's Civil Affiars, Engineering, most A-10 units are all National Guard. Units have seen deployments from here in PA to Kosovo, Afagistian & even Hati. The guard is not just for fires, floods and riots anymore.

I agree. We should use the gaurd to protect our own borders, not trying to secure other borders. The gaurd should never be sent overseas.

Well, Article I Section 8 allows Congress to call them into federal service as part of the regular military.
I agree that it's a bad idea. But so is most of the current foreign policy.

Who says they're supposed to be here? The National Guard grew out of the WWI Deployments and were used in WWII, Vietnam, and the Gulf War as well. This is exactly what they're for. We don't need armored divisions to partol our borders or do disaster relief, those are additional NG tasks. Their primary task is to backfill the regular army in time of war.
