If he presses charges its a Felonies, most likely grand theft, Breaking and entering, Burglary (entering a home with the intent to commit a felony). He should be doing hard time, you have an extremely nice neighbor. oh yeah, and firearms offences automatically carry 10 years and 10K fine. Good luck with that.

Wow, some places also have a grand theft firearm. The detectives might have a great case and be messing with your friend, and they might have no case at all. They could also be waiting for the Prosecutor to make a decision on whether to prosecute or not.
Most likely if charges are filed by the Prosecutor, it would be a felony and most places look very dimly at people who break into other people's homes. Some places it is automatic prison, for others, probation and jail time.
Sounds like your friend needs to talk to an attorney. If they cannot afford one, they should try legal aid to answer their questions.
Good Luck!

Awesome!! Everyone should be trained in the proper use of a gun and should be able to protect their home, their family and their property. Enough of the bleeding heart liberals who feel that no one has the right to own a gun. I was raised in a home where there were many guns and I was taught at a very early age how to handle a gun, how to properly use one and how to practice safety. There was never an issue with guns or with the fear that they would get in the wrong hands. We practiced proper gun rules and if we were in a situation where we needed to defend our property or save our lives, we could. My Mom did, in fact, face a home invader when she was home alone with 3 children under the age of 4. A man put a ladder up to our home and climbed in her bedroom window. He climbed in to face a gun being aimed at his face. He backed out the window and fell most of the way down the ladder and ran off but was caught by the police. If my Mom did not have a gun and know how to use it, things could have turned out in a much different manner. I praise that brave little girl who had the guts to take care of the matter. I also praise her Dad for raising her to be able to use a gun properly. She should be awarded a medal for bravery and for having the courage to do the right thing. I am very proud of her and hope she receives the proper recognition that she deserves.

THe charge is probably going to be burglary of a habitation with special circumstances (theft of a firearm). He can also be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, depending on where he lives and the type of gun(s). The sentence for a 1st degree felony in my state is life, or a term of not more than 99 yrs or less than 5 yrs.

The neighbor was really nice! I wouldn't have been so nice if someone broke in and stole MY gun! Sorry, I don't know the law, but the punishment should be pretty stiff. I'd say wrf3k is probably correct. Gun crimes usually carry big sentences.

Your friend could be screwed depending on how the police want to handle the situation. If the US Marshall's Service gets involved then your friend could be looking at federal charges for theft of a firearm. I'd tell your friend to walk the straightest line he can until this all blows over.

Well, he could have been legally shot and killed by the neighbor while stealing the guns. He was lucky, lets hope he learns a lesson from this while sitting in prison.
