There are no known eye infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. Allergies or something unrelated are probably to blame.

It is possible ur kitty may be suffering from feline herpes, which IS NOT transmitted to human or other animals. This is very common in cats that come from large colonies. It is treatable with eye ointment, but i dont believe it is ever cured. Have ur kitten spayed as soon as he or she is old enough, as it is passed down to the infected cats litters. As for ur infection, if this is ur first cat (judging by the fact u dont know what sex it is heehee bless u), could u be allergic? i have lived with cats my whole life and have severe allergies to them, finding that the shorter haired breeds are the ones that lose more fur and cause more damage to my sinus. To not let this deter u if this is the case tho! A simple anti allergy tablet does me, although i find my allergies only bother me at certain times of the year as well. all the best with ur new fur baby, a house is not a home without a cat! (or 2, or 3, or 4...) ;)

I definitly know this answer because it's happened to me.
WHats going on with you is that you didn't wash your hands before touching your eye. When you are introduced to a new cat, they have their own personal fur oils. Some won't bother you at all, and some will. I have 4 cats, and have had 13 total in my life. I've never had a reaction to any of them. Yet i can go to anyones house, or even @ tthe shelter I volunteer for, touch a cat i dont know or i'm not used to- touch my eye and it flares up like pink eye would. Its a simple cat allergy. This'll most likely fade with time spent with your new kitty. Just be sure to wash your hands after playing with the kitty before you go and touch your eyes !

Yes, this is pretty common. My eye dr. said that pink eye can be spread to humans from cats. You should get medicine for both you and the cat. And always wash your hands after handling the cat and before touching your face. Also, it's possible that if the cat only has the infection in one eye that you could spread it to the other if you medicate one eye and w/o washing your hands, medicate the other.

Hand in there. You'll get it under control.
