In Islam, hypocrisy (nifaaq) means deceiving, scheming and presenting an outward appearance of good while concealing its opposite.

1) The Quran says several things about hypocrites...

"When the hypocrites come to thee, they say : We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's Messenger. And Allah knows thou art indeed His Messenger. And Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are surely liars." (Holy Qur'an 63:1)

"The Hypocrites - they think they are over-reaching God, but He will over-reach them: When they stand up to prayer, they stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but little do they hold God in remembrance; (Holy Quran, 4:142)"

"The Hypocrites, men and women, (have an understanding) with each other: They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close with their hands. They have forgotten God; so He hath forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are rebellious and perverse. (Holy Quran, 9:67)"

Hell will be the punishment of hypocrites according to the Quran, because they harm Islam more than anyone else by passing themselves off as Muslims and espousing the values of Islam but in reality going against those values...

"And that He may punish the Hypocrites, men and women, and the Polytheists men and women, who imagine an evil opinion of God. On them is a round of Evil: the Wrath of God is on them: He has cursed them and got Hell ready for them: and evil is it for a destination. (Holy Quran, 48:6)"

"The Hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire: no helper wilt thou find for them; (Holy Quran, 4:145)"

Of course, Muslims believe that God can always forgive anyone, so Hell is never a guarantee for anyone. But still, being a hypocrite definitely isn't good!

2) Also, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said several things about hypocrites...

"Four traits whoever possesses them is a hypocrite and whoever possesses some of them has an element of hypocrisy until he leaves it: the one who when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks his promise, when he disputes he transgresses and when he makes an agreement he violates it."

Umar (one of the companions of the Prophet) mentioned a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): "The thing from which I fear for you the most is the knowledgeable hypocrite." Umar was then asked: "How can a hypocrite be knowledgeable?" To which Umar answered: "He speaks with wisdom but acts with injustice."

3) In the Shari’a (Islamic law), nifaaq/hypocrisy is of two types: greater hypcrisy and lesser hypocrisy. Greater hypocrisy is when you pretend to be a Muslim but you really don't believe in it. These are the people the Quran refers to as going to the deepest parts of Hell. Lesser hypocrisy is when you are a Muslim but you show the 4 signs of hypocrisy as mentioned above.

Allahu Alam (God Knows Best). May God forgive me for any mistakes I have made. I am humble before Him.

Peace Be Upon You All.
