With 80 confirmed "kills", and probably another 40 to 50 which took place over enemy lines and could not be confirmed, the "Red Baron" remains an enigmatic character to this day. Despite the amazing successes brought by his keen eyesight and quick reflexes, he shunned publicity and became increasingly withdrawn throughout the war. When he finally fell victim to the perils of combat on April 21, 1918, even his enemies mourned his passing.

Born in 1892 in Breslau, Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland) Richthofen was the son of a hereditary baron. With Germany's enterance into WW1 in 1914, Richthofen mobilized in a Silesian cavalry unit, and survived the first battle of Verdun in 1915. Soon after, he transferred to the Luftwaffe (Imperial German Air Force) as a bombadier. By 1916, however, he was tapped for training in the then-new art of fighter combat, flying an Albatros D.2 in March, 1916. By the end of 1916, Richtofen was a certified ace, having downed over 20 aircraft, including the number one British ace up to that time, Maj. Lanoe Hawker. Due to his talley, Richthofen earned the medal "Pour le Mérite" (yes, the official name's in French) in December 1916. Throughout the rest of the war, the legend of the Red Baron continued to grow, as did his kill talley, officially reaching 80 kills in April 1918.

On a human color trivia of the Red Baron, he did have 80 confirmed enemy aircraft shot down, on top of the fact that he nearly washed out of flight training. Upon his subsequent downing by the British forces (in which evidence strongly suggests he was actually brought down by ground fire, not a British aircraft), he was given a burial with full military honors, and a German representative was invited under a flag of truce to witness the proceedings.

Eighty men tried
And eighty men died
And were buried together in the country side
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The bloody Red Baron was rollin' up a score
Eighty men died trying to end that spree
By the bloody Red Baron of Germany.

80 kills for the Baron. PBS just did a Nova episode on his death last month by the way. There was always a dispute over who got the kill. The evidence and medical findings seem to point to Ground fire, from a Australian vickers gunner. Not Capt. Brown and his Camel.
