I'm in Nursing School right now (in my 3rd) semester, and I love it so far! I'm getting my ADN (which is an RN, just cost me less to get), and I plan on taking online courses later in life to get my BSN and hopefully one day my MSN. As far as schools go, it depends on the state...and any accredited program (try a community college or university)should be fine. I highly reccomend getting your RN as opposed to your LVN--it's not too much harder and the job opportunities are better. Where I live, an ADN is just as good as a BSN for employment--you can even get management positions as an ADN(w/some experience of course)--so having to get your BSN is a myth.
Classes required vary depending on your school of choice, but be prepared to take Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Psychology, Algebra(some require only college math), etc. These classes are tough, but study hard and you will be fine. You can check out schools in your area via internet, that is how I found mine. It's definetly worth the effort and there are jobs EVERYWHERE for you, so I think it is a great plan!
Good luck to you!

Are you in California? California has a list of felonies that would prevent a person from being able to get a nursing license. When I went to nursing school, my instructor was emphatic that we reveal any and all activity that may show up on a background check. I didn't have anything myself but there were others. She said that it would not necessarily disqualify a person, but if a person lied on the documents which were forwarded to the state's Dept of Justice for a investigation into the person's background. It is all for the best because they have the patient's interest at heart.

I am currently in school now, before I was thinking about going for nursing, then I deccided on Medical assisting, to me, because my mom is a nurse. The work is a little less envolved, so you will see less blood or vomit. Things like that. Medical Assisting is a good start, it can easily have degrees added to it, like radiology, or others like that. My mom is a nurse and loves it. As far as schools go, I would never go threw a hospital's program, they have low graduation rates usually they make you work for them for a certain number of years. Depending on where you live, a technical school would do, choose one that doesn't make you make monthly payments, and also ones that have more than just two finacial aid programs.

retired nurse--worked on Indian reservations for many years,
Too many stories to tell here.

The Indian Health Service branch of the US Public Health Service used to pay you to go to school and paid all your expenses in exchange for two years of service after you graduate.
Maybe they still do. You can contact them in Rockville, Maryland.
