It can be really tricky. Get a book, and go to the seminar at Lowes and Home depot. The angles can be confusing and crown molding can be expensive per foot.Lowes has a great HOW-TO library , on-line.

yes, these cuts can be tricky, and a fairly expensive compound mitre saw would be the best Tool for the job... these saws have instruction specific to the individual saw, and may take some getting use to, ,,If you are talking about a basic crown molding, Then a Mitre box and saw can be used, The trick IS to hold and cut the piece in the mitre box, as it will be installed, and then cut your inside or outside angle cut, This is best for square corners..
IF>There are odd corner angles or intricate Crown molding designs.. These will be done best on a Compound mitre saw.. they are also available as a rental, and instruction may be given there..try some less expensive -for practice or a small sample job..Safety glasses and be careful!

I have used a pin nailer which works good, but I find if you use a pin nailer in conjunction with some adhesive (liquid nails) it works better, but don't plan on ever taking it off. Also don't take for granted that your corners are 45 degrees, get some filler for the corners you will need it for the pin nailer anyway, but you will love the finished product. Also like it was mentioned, go to Lowes or Home Depot and ask their opinions, or go to one of their workshops. Can't hurt. Good luck

crown molding requires a compound miter saw to achieve the two cuts needed and is not a beginers project
