Because they take some bits of the bible way too seriously... and hatred towards homosexuals is one of the last socially acceptable discriminations in the US and in fact the world.

I do not intend to be critical or judgemental. That is not for me to do. God is the final judge when it comes to that.
Bible reference:
And He commanded His people: “You must not lie down with a male the same as you lie down with a woman. It is a detestable thing.”— Leviticus 18:22, also read Romans 1:27, Jude 7.
He also disapproves of people who consent/agree with those practicing this sin. Romans 1:32
A homosexual may repent, put his/her faith in God, believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and he/she too, will go to Heaven as any other sinner.
Maybe the question should only be thought about and not answered.
I know that I had rather leave this world believing that Jesus is the Son of God, and His Word is true, and to find out I was right... than to leave this world not believing and find out I was wrong.

Homosexuals can go to Heaven if they repent and leave their life of sin! If they feel they cant be with the opposite sex like God intended then they should stay away from sex and not do that which God considers detestable. (Leviticus 18:22)
Sin is sin, nobody gets a free ride, everyone must turn from their sins! You cant claim to be a believer and live in sin.
So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. -Galatians 5:16

Some will go to hell. Not those who truly repent.
Christians are afraid of what they do not know. Sin is sin. A Homo can repent and receive grace just as a murderer or rapist can.

This opinion is based on the view that homosexuality is a choice. This view is unfortunately based on ignorance. I know quite a few gay people who mean the world to me and who are also good people. I'm fairly certain that they have a better chance of obtaining Paradise as any other good person.

There are sadly a bunch of Christians who forsake basic Biblical teachings (like the fact that God's mercy has no bounds, any who call on the name of the Lord will be saved, all sin is equal in God's eyes, etc) and focus on minute little verses about things like homosexuality. It is a sin, yes, but God is able to forgive any sin.

That is why the Lord tells us to mature in our walk with Him. Then we don't make silly snap judgments and blanket statements that misrepresent the Lord Himself.
If more Christians submitted themselves to the body of Christ so that they could learn to "rightly divine the word of truth". We wouldn't have so many silly non scriptural arguments. People who think that they can interpret scripture all by themselves and don't need to get along with the Body of Christ are setting themselves up for a fall.
"There is wisdom in an abundance of counselors".

Judging is for God to do - He gave us His Word to live by - His word says that homosexuals will not go to Heaven:
1 Corinthians 6:9-10
9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
So - it is NOT the Christians that say it - it is God's Word.

Homosexual sin(s) are no worse than any other sin.
They can also be confessed to God, be forgiven, and the person strengthened to repentence. That would bring the person inside the pearly gates, assuming it is Jesus that he confesses to and asks forgiveness from.

A believer who denies that homosexuality is a sin is like one who denies that adultery is a sin. They're kidding them selves and rebelling against the Holy Spirit's convictions. Eventually one would question whether they were really saved. But a sinner who admits he or she is a sinner and sincerely asks for forgiveness deserves to get it "even 70 times 7 times" (Matt 18:22.) They deserve our prayers and support as well. We have no idea what demons they're fighting, jut like they have no idea of ours. Remember, if we could stop sinning we wouldn't need a Savior.
