That's an excellent idea. However, I wouldn't want them in Iraq, there's too much trouble they could get into. A better spot for them would be remote mountain regions in Afghanistan where they could go on search and destroy missions, sweep out secret bunkers with shotguns, etc. Simple destruction is the milieu of the thug, not urban counterinsurgency.

If a person is ever offered that as an option "Join the Army or go to jail," they are permanently and forever disqualified from ever joining. There is a reason for this. The military is all volunteer, and selects quality people to join its ranks. To diminish that by using criminals would reduce morale and esprit de corps in the military.
The military can't afford the additional manpower and resources to police a bunch of people who have already demonstrated a desire to engage in criminal activity. Let's leave the policy as is.

No we should not. You could not give them, their own "units". They would need leaders and I would hate to be one of their leaders. You are also looking at the Army as an organization that anyone can join. There is a reason we do not let habitual criminals in the Army. They have no discipline. The Army is not reform school. Do not take away the honor of every soldiers service by coming up with stupid ideas like this one.

I think it is a good idea. However the Army, as it is now, doesn't want them.
As far as that other girl said - about having integrity during war - I think we passed that point when our soldiers went nuts and raped and killed a bunch of civilians.
You can never EVER trust a bunch of hormonal young men, in a group, with guns. So you might as well send the ones in jail, because shi* is gonna get fu*ked up anyway.
Everyone here wants to hate on my answer, but I'm just telling the truth. I don't mean any disrespect to the people that are out there doing a good job - my boyfriend is in the Navy. I respect what they are doing, when they do what they are supposed to be doing. But since when are large groups of boys (because I'm sorry, you aren't a man at 18) trustworthy???

Not a chance. I wouldn't trust someone that fits that description with the responsibility that goes with being a member of the military. I certainly would not give them the weaponry that we have available. Even further, I would not want to have to depend on some punk who can't stay out of trouble to watch my back during a fight. Seem's that "thugs" have a tendency to think of themselves first, or they wouldn't do the things they do. I can't see myself trusting someone like that with my life. Lock 'em up, or drop onto an island somewhere with all the rest of the "thugs", but don't saddle the military with "a bunch of retards you couldn't trust with a potatoe gun".

Maybe not the Army but some Military unit where they would be sent to remote areas to do special missions.
Not near civilians or our other troops.
Who knows, maybe some would come back reformed and join our regular military if they served honorably.

just what we need is thugs in the army. there is enough criminal activity going on in all areas of the armed forces as it is , why would you want to add to it. the army probably would want them why not. but we would still be paying for there housing and all there support and up keep, either in jail or the army the money comes out of our tax dollars. and" they could go shot someone" how dumb are you?

It was done with different results. They could form the next Black Sheep squadron or end up running some black market or drug den. That's basically what the French Foreign legion is about. Most of them have been minor criminals that got their criminal records wiped clean for their service.

The military tries as well as it can to keep out as many bad apples as possible. What you are suggesting would bring many more scandals for the USA when those thugs go around raping and killing instead of fighting the enemy.
