What's the best way to go to Shea Stadium via mass transit from Orange County? I was thinking of taking either the NJ Transit bus or the Shortline bus to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and then hopping on the 7 train but I've heard that its not exactly the safest area to be in at night and I'd have to go through there at night. However it seems that the most direct way to go to Shea from where i am other than driving is to go through Port Authority....Is this the best route to take or should I go a different way?

shea stadium is out in the middle of nowhere. nobody hangs out there, should be safe at 3am. 7 train is heavily used at all hours.

the area around the port authority bus terminal can be a mixed bag. inside the buidling is safe. the PAPD monitors all their cameras 24/7 and if anyting is amiss, they are on the scene within seconds. outside the terminal, it's just 1 block walk along 42nd st to the 7 train. just stay on 42nd itself with all the lights and all the people, and you won't have a problem.

if you are coming from NJ, this should be easy! Get to Penn Station... from Penn Station you can take the Long Island Railroad ( the red line- either Port Washington or Great Neck lines) THEY STOP AT SHEA STADIUM WHEN THERE IS A GAME. The ticket might cost you anywhere from $5-$7 bucks depending on whether you are traveling during peak hours or not. But it is well worth it. We are talking about a 15 minute commute from Penn Station to Shea Stadium.

Just make sure when you the ticket at Penn Station that the trains (Port Washington /Great Neck) are running local, because every other train changes.

Alternatively, you can check the site to calculate what times those trains are running local to Shea Stadium.

As luck would have it, I just got back from the Mets game by taking the 7 train to Times Square (that's the same station as Port Authority.) It's easy and safe and by far the quickest way.
Is Metro North an option? Because the 7 stops at Grand Central also. I should add that you don't have to go outside at all when you get to Port Authority.

The Port Authority is filled with police. And at night they limit access to bus ticket holders only. So I think the your planned route will be safe enough.

If you are still not comfortable you could look into taking a ferry to Shea stadium. For more info check out this link: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/masstran/ferries/baseball.html
