I already did... (Desert Storm)
HOWEVER!!!!! I have to be honest... I have two nephews that are the age to go.... I have made them promise me that they would come and talk to me before they ever make a decision to join. If they do.... I plan to show them about 9 hrs of home video that I shot while I was there. It would make Ollie North think twice!

Some people are fit to be bakes and some butchers and some fighters.
If there was an absolute need for a fight I would fight. However in a country where we have went to war for all the wrong reasons against very small countries that never posed a threat I would not.
Logic tells me to deal with issues. When I don't get tow ork someting out do I just go to war with someone? No, because logic tells me there is many routes before fighting.
Many people have put blame on oil and to deny it being in the minds of people is silly. If you are rational and unbiased of course its a concern. It is a number one money maker for companies, I imagine it takes in the most tax of anything and they say its on the low hmmm.
Its like when I studied the DEA its all public how they operate and the things they do and don't. Morals out the window but if t hey can do it within the law they do.
The example set will pay its toll.

I served as an army officer in the mid 1970's. I recently returned from Iraqa sa DOD contractor for 18 months. I tried to reactivate my commission by I missed being able to rejoin by 3 years. So now I am planning on getting another contract to return to Iraq as a civilian contractor. One of the guys that works with the troop, travels in convoys and gets shot at...not some desk jockey.

Anyone that sees that there is no other employer in America that will take someone with a high school education, teach them a valuable skill, pay for their college education at the same time, and only ask for a 2-6 year employment agreement. Not everyone that enlists gets to go fight, but that is just another shining example of ignorance of our fellow Americans about people that are doing so much to provide you with the opportunity to exist when their are those out there that want to exterminate the entire population of our country because of their fanatical religious beliefs. If you diagree with that also, you again are showing your ignorance. Go see an Army representative to see what is offered before passing judgement on enlisting.
If the war and danger are your arguments, I ask you, "did you think twice about the fact that more young people are killed in car accidents they were driving in, before you took yourself to the DMV?" I didn't think you did. That is an example of having what you want without doing all you can to preserve the right to have it.

By the way for you pacifists, does that mean if you were getting raped or someone was about to kill your kids you would pick up a gun if it was available and kill them, or fight back for that matter. Would you pull a Ghandi? and let it happen?

It's more of a personal choice than anything. The army can and does offer a lifestyle, more so than a job. Yes, you could get yourself shot, but then again you can die in a car crash (more servicemen and women die in RTA's than in combat).
The military tends to run in families. If you grow up in the forces, as I did, you generally end up joining yourself. It's not to everyones liking, but I couldn't work in retail, it would bore me silly.

Yes. I'm currently in the RAF, but if I wasn't at this moment, I'd do it again. I want to serve my Country and it's people. I'm a patriot and see joining up as the best way to serve. I'm proud to be in HM forces and truly want to do my part.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I was once young and foolish enough to believe in the military. I was sadly mistaken, and wouldn't do that again. They have no regard for human life whatsoever. A soldier is calculated to last +/- 5 years anything more is good anything less is unfortunate whatever else happens to you after your military service is no concern of theirs(e.g. gulf war syndrome) you're put through extreme physical endurance and deprived of any comfort whatsoever and all that for just over minimum pay. No thanks

when they pay for you to go to university (even if it is to study outdoor activity management, or something equally useless) why not? Also, it's suicide without the guilt. But i think some people just want to be soldiers, and run around with guns in army kit, until they get their brains blown out, or they grow up. no offence, anyone.
