- Every few hours, take the dog outside to a place you designate
as a "bathroom" area.

- 30 minutes after the dog or puppy eats, do the same.

- Stay in this bathroom area, and praise the dog lavishly when
they relieve themselves.

- If the dog doesn't use the bathroom when you've taken them
outside to the appropriate spot, try again 15 minutes later.
Continue doing this until they've actually used the bathroom
spot.

- When the dog is inside, watch closely for any signs of needing
to "go". A dog will circle and sniff areas when they're about to
relieve themselves.

It takes some work in the beginning but things should go smoothly if you keep up some sort of schedule. DON'T use puppy pads or anything that will teach them to go in the house! Crate training worked best for us (and is best when you aren't available much during the day). Make sure they go out roughly 15 minutes after playing, napping, and eating. Take them out on a leash and show them where to go. Pick a word for them to associate with going outside to potty and use it every time! Reward them for good behavior! Don't scold for bad behavior, though, dogs don't recollect things easily, so it will just hurt the relationship (and training) with your puppy. There will probably be some accidents, so have some cleaner handy (409 is always a good back up, even on carpet)! Good luck! All puppies train differently, but these tips should help!

Is it a big little or medium size dog? that makes a difference. My Rott I just put him on a schedule kind of . Feed him bring him out. When he wakes up bring him out. After a play time bring him out. With my cocker I put down pee pads (which may work for anysize dog not sure) And trained him on those then just moved them to the door then outside. He was so smart he only had like 4 accidents off the pee pads. It took a few trys outside so make sure you bring him out when you can to make sure he's not scare d to go outside. Good luck and have fun. I have a magnet that says " Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot about puppies" Isn't that soooooo true???

I would suggest crate training, but you have to do it right. We didn't with our first puppy. He's 13 now but still pees inside the house on throw rugs sometimes. This is because we paper trained him. He thinks anything on the floor is okay to pee on. Get the right sized crate, and make it a safe place for your puppy. Never keep him in there more than 4 hours a stretch. Keep the door open to the crate all the time, and keep it in the main living area where the family hangs out, and in your bedroom at night. Whenever you can't keep your eyes on puppy, he needs to be put in the crate. That way, no accidents. Your vet can give you more guidance. Good luck!

Consistency. Always take them out right after they eat, when you get home from work, before going to bed, when you get up and and tell them "go potty" or whatever you want to use - but be consistent. Go to the same place. Don't take them on a walk - use the same place in the yard. Some people even put in a sandbox-like area. Once they are trained to go in that same place they will continue to do so - and then you have all your poop in one place rather than throughou the yard.
Then, when they do go, give LOTSl of praise! "Good boy (girl)..Good potty"

I have 3 beagles and I foster for BREW Beagles Midwest. Go to their website they have a housetraining section you can click on. Good luck! You can also get them to ring a bell when they have to go outside. Put a bell next to your door and everytime you go

When they go pick up poo take it outside with the puppy, put the puppy where u want it to potty, and the poo near the same area potty your self near the area. make sure the puppy watches u go. Figure out how long after they eat that they potty. adjust feeding time so u can let it out to go potty. Its like a child. u have to teach them but dogs are territorial. so they like an area. As a punishment if they persist put their food where they went after u take up poo.

crate train your dog. this does two things house trains and gives the dog a "safe" haven when things get stressful. just make sure that you get one big enough for the full grown dog and that you put him in and lock the door so he cant get out. you can also line it with a shirt you and your partner have worn so that the puppy can smell you all night and a wind up alarm clcok may help too. they dont like it when you first start but will grow to love their crate as a place to be safe and sleep.

First you need to start by establishing yourself as his "pack leader" as this is how dogs think so you'll need to make a mix of white vinegar with water in a spray bottle, when he does his "duty" in the house, wipe up and spray with the formula, lead him back to the spot ,let him smell the area (do not stuff his face in ANYTHING)and then firmly tell him NO!,and then if possible immediately put him outside.
(the vinegar resembles the acid smellin urine so the pup thinks that you have urinated over his (like the do in the wild)and that you are telling him that this is your area and he can't pee in it)
Place a bell hanging on a string on the back door(or door that you will be taking him out of or letting out to go)
When you go to put him outside, ring the bell and tell him/her "duty" Fido!
Try and keep your commands to one or two words.Be patient if he/she is real young. It may sound strange but it has worked for all my dogs and my two weimaraner pups I have now easily learned this routine.FAST!
Good luck Pack Leader!

crate training & praise him when he does it right!! i would walk my dog & when she wen't "pee' i would pat her head & praise her while she was going,,when she was done , the praise stoped. come up with a comand word that means to go out / pee-pee..what ever...make it the same word for that specific task. ..also when he's done going tak him back inside,,so he gets the idea that he was just going to do potty OUTSIDE..wait about 15 min & then let them out or take them out to play. i have a fenced in yard so sasha was walked to her potty spot, go , then back inside,,,then i wouuld just let her out to run around & play..it may take a month or so for him to learn, be patient. and remember if he goes in nthe house it's because YOU forgot to let him out or didn't catch him asking ( sad look , wimperr , pacing , sniffing) good luck !! oh...get yourself a copy of the book" house breaking for dummies" ,,,it's a great book !!!!
